Chicago, A True Sports Town
June 21, 2013 -- Being from Delaware most people from my area growing up would adopt professional sports teams to follow. Because there are no hometown professional teams in Delaware, most Delawareans followed the teams in Philly or Baltimore, and some New York. When I arrived in Chicago it was immediately apparent that things were very different in my new hometown.
Chicago is a true sports town. With two baseball teams, the Bears, the Bulls, the Blackhawks and of course your very own Chicago Sky, the people of Chicago have several teams to support and follow and they do so with some serious loyalty and passion. I was able to experience this Chicago pride when I had the chance to throw out the first pitch at the Cubs game on one of my first nights in the city. To me, there is no greater feeling than being a part of a city that carries an unbelievable amount of pride in where they come from. I feel really lucky to have been drafted to a city with fans that live for their sports teams! After only living in Chicago for a month and a half I find myself glued to the TV for all of the Blackhawks exciting, sometimes too exciting, playoff games!
Whenever I go anywhere in the city or even outside the city in the suburbs, I can feel the sense of loyalty that fans have to their teams and it is truly contagious. Fans will recognize my teammates and me when we are out and about and they are always sure to show their Chicago sky pride and knowledge. Recently a fan even got a tattoo showing her support for one of my teammates. If Ive learned one thing about the people of Chicago in the last month and a half its that they sure love their sports teams and I am blessed to be a part of it all!
