With Dawn Staley becoming the new head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team, we look back at her illustrious career.
- Staley was part of the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Women’s national teams, all of which won the gold medal
- She was the ninth pick in the 1999 WNBA Draft and spent her first six-plus years in the league with the Charlotte Sting
- Staley was selected as a WNBA All-Star for six consecutive seasons, from 2001-06.
- She was the flag-bearer in the opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympics
- Staley was traded to the Comets during the 2005 season. She spent the remainder of that season as well as the 2006 season with Houston before retiring.
- In her final WNBA All-Star appearance, Staley made her final three to win the win the Three-Point Shootout.
- She hung it up for good once the 2006 WNBA season ended.
- Since retiring from active play, she has served as head coach of the Temple (2000-08) and South Carolina (2008-present) women’s basketball teams, as well as a U.S. Women’s National Team assistant.
- She was enshrined in the Basketball Hall Of Fame in 2013.
- Staley is very familiar with the current USA roster after winning gold — the team’s sixth straight — in 2016 as part of the coaching staff.
