The Chicago Sky played much of the 2014 regular season without superstars Elena Delle Donne and Sylvia Fowles, yet by September, when the team was finally nearing full strength, they made their way into the WNBA Finals, falling only to the Phoenix Mercury.
So, the expectations are simple in Chicago: Get back to the WNBA Finals and win a championship.
Delle Donne is said to be healthy heading into the season after suffering a few ailments last year, and when she is on the court, she is one of the league’s most captivating stars. She has MVP potential and has the ability to carry this franchise to new heights, something she’s done ever since being drafted.
The addition of Cappie Pondexter — acquired in a trade for Epiphanny Prince — adds another veteran contributor and a proven winner that could be valuable in the postseason. General manager and head coach Pokey Chatman also opted to extend Pondexter’s contract after she was acquired, which the team believes will just be another step in the team’s drive for a title.
“Extending Cappie, I think it’s a perfect fit and match for her,” Chatman said during Pondexter’s introductory press conference. “You know, they always say ‘there is a time and a place for everything.’ This is the time and this is the place for Cappie to be with us as we try to achieve our everything.”
As the Sky work towards that “everything” this season, they’ll have the opportunity to bring in a talented young asset with the fifth pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft. Chatman says the Sky are interested in bringing in a young prospect capable of manning the forward position when Delle Donne is on the bench.
“[Delle Donne] allows us to play so versatile, we could really go in a lot of different directions,” said Chatman. “We’re going to look at the forward position really hard first. I think with these two players (Jewell Loyd and Amanda Zahui B.) entering the draft, it will be tremendous opportunity for some nice options to fall to us at five.”
Chatman says ideally the Sky want a forward that allows the team’s bench unit to play the same way it does when Delle Donne is on the floor. And with the prospects that will likely be available when the Sky are officially on the clock, Chicago should come away from the draft with another talented piece as it looks to get back to the WNBA Finals in 2015.
