Charles To Donate Half Of Salary to Hopey’s Heart Foundation

Tina Charles is off to a hot start on the court this season. She’s helped guide the Liberty to a 3-2 record and is putting up the type of statlines that have earned her multiple All-Star appearances and an MVP award.

Perhaps her biggest action, however, hasn’t happened on the court. Charles, for the second straight season, is donating half of her salary to purchase automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) through her foundation, Hopey’s Heart.

The foundation works to provide AEDs and CPR training in numerous impactful areas, including schools and recreational centers. The foundation was started to honor Charles’ aunt Maureen “Hopey” Vaz, who passed away from multiple organ failure in 2013.

“It means a lot just to keep the awareness out there about sudden cardiac arrest,” Charles told the Associated Press. “Taking an interest in others is key in my life. It’s my way of giving back.”

The foundation also honors former Michigan high school basketball star, Wes Leonard. He died of Sudden Cardiac Arrest at the end of a game in 2011.

“I was impacted by (Leonard’s) story, I was impacted by my aunt passing away and I just wanted something to live on in her memory and in the kind of person she was,” Charles told WNBA.com in 2013. “I know this foundation has a lot of potential to impact and save people’s lives if they were supposed to be struggling with Sudden Cardiac Arrest.”

“Anything I can do to impact an institution with an AED is extremely important to me,” Charles told the Associated Press.
