Breanna Stewart Named WNBA Rookie of the Month Presented by Samsung


NEW YORK, July 26, 2016Breanna Stewart of the Seattle Storm today was named the WNBA Rookie of the Month presented by Samsung for games played in July.  Stewart earned the honor for the third month in a row.

The WNBA Rookie of the Month and the Eastern and Western Conference Player of the Month awards are presented by Samsung and are part of the larger WNBA Performance Awards presented by Samsung program.  This marks the third consecutive season that Samsung, an official WNBA marketing partner, will present the WNBA’s highest individual honors, including the WNBA Most Valuable Player, WNBA Most Improved Player, WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year, WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and WNBA Rookie of the Year.

In July, Stewart led all rookies in scoring (20.0 ppg), rebounding (9.3 rpg), assists (4.0 apg) and blocked shots (2.3 bpg).  Among all WNBA players, she was tied for fifth in scoring, tied for second in rebounding, fourth in blocks and first in minutes played (35.6 mpg).

The former UConn standout scored in double digits in all eight games played in July, including five with 20 points or more.  In her highest-scoring game of the month, Stewart finished with 32 points to go with 11 rebounds and five assists in a 93-82 loss to the Indiana Fever on July 10.

For the season, Stewart ranks fifth in the league in scoring (19.2 ppg), second in rebounding (9.3 rpg) and third in blocks (2.1 bpg).  Stewart also has eight double-doubles.

Highlights of Stewart’s month included:

  • July 6 at New York: Recorded a double-double with 24 points and 16 rebounds and added four assists and three steals in a 78-74 loss to the Liberty.
  • July 10 vs. Indiana: Scored 32 points (on 11-of-15 shooting from the field), grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out five assists in a 93-82 loss.
  • July 20 vs. San Antonio: Collected 22 points, six rebounds, two assists and five blocks in an 83-69 win.
