Breanna Stewart On Good and Bad Side Of Plays Of the Year

Breanna Stewart laughed when she heard the question Monday on a media conference call. “I was waiting for this to come up,” she said.

Sunday, the player used to creating her own highlight reel came up on the wrong end of a Top 10 Play — and against a former college teammate, no less. Liberty shot blocker Kiah Stokes left Stewart feeling rejected with an emphatic block that earned the No. 3 spot on SportsCenter.

Even during an NBA Finals game, SB Nation deemed it the play of the night on the hardwood.

“I told her she didn’t need to block me like that,” Stewart joked. “But in all seriousness, it was a nice play on her part. We were trying to make the game closer with less than a minute to play. Usually I’m on the same team as Kiah, so she’s doing that to other people. You can’t be too upset — it was a great basketball play. To be able to see what she’s done, and the success that she’s had in the WNBA and even overseas, you can’t not be happy for her.”

Consider it a “down” in the typical up-and-down transition for rookies into the pros. Stewart has mostly experienced the ups, recently earning Rookie of the Month honors after leading rookies in points, rebounds and blocks.

In fact, just two days before she teamed up with co-star Jewell Loyd on perhaps the offensive play of the year so far. More importantly — and impressively — the Storm notched their second win of the season over the Mercury, with Loyd pouring in a career-high 32 points and Stewart posting a near triple-double (14 points, 10 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 blocks).

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Stewart said of playing with Loyd. “During college we played against each other most of the time. But now to be on the same team, we both have versatile styles where we can do a lot of things on the court. Especially in the game against Phoenix, things were clicking.”

“You talked about the alley-oop play, but that was just a small sign of hopefully what we plan to do as we continue to learn what each other likes and doesn’t like. It’s exciting. We wan’t it to happen as soon as possible, but it comes down to how quickly we can build together.”
