All-Star Swagger: Backcourt Edition

Study the fashion identities of the powerful guards who will play at the WNBA All-Star game.
With unique approaches to athlete fashion, four impressive guards are joining the starters highlighted at the AT&T WNBA All-Star 2022. Apart from having a natural intuition for quickly moving on-court, these players have distinct fashion identities that combine the best elements of basketball with the latest trends in streetwear. Similar to their in-game performance, this group is exceptionally diverse in creating their pre-game images, including sporty and formal outfits.
After 21 years with the Seattle Storm, WNBA legend Sue Bird will lead an All-Star team as a co-captain. Known for her collection of rare sneakers, Bird sets the bar high for pre-game style. Wearing wild, printed pants or an oversized blazer, Bird shows team love by incorporating green into her fits. With an equally impressive sneaker collection, Sabrina Ionescu also uses fashion to shout out her hometown in the Bay Area. Unlike Ionescu’s urban and tactical style, Kelsey Plum presents sharper, structured outfits that incorporate the latest fashion trends. Like Plum, Jackie Young is another reigning champ of outfits that mix everyday pieces with designer grails. These backcourt players are advancing their teams’ scores and evolving how beauty and style can be combined with exceptional strength.

Celebrating her recent retirement announcement, Sue Bird returns to All-Star as one of the team’s co-captains. As a leading name in the WNBA, Bird has always been known for having epic style, but this season she’s been able to introduce several new themes into her fashion. Working with stylist Courtney Mays, Bird has brought tons of eye-catching designer pieces into her outfits, like oversized blazers, funky sunglasses, and lots of dark greens to match the Seattle Storm uniforms. Bird’s entrepreneurship also shows in her fashion choices by wearing merchandise from her recent collaboration with alwaysbiy or rocking a custom letterman jacket from TOGETHXR, a media company that Bird co-founded.

Representing the New York Liberty, Sabrina Ionescu is making her debut at All-Star this year. Garnering attention since her college years, Ionescu is always finetuning her instinct-driven approach to defense. As a Bay Area native, this player is finding ways to show love for her city in her fashion choices, including wearing an Oakland-inspired yellow jersey. Her signature style always includes fly Nike sneakers, complemented by sportier pieces like Nike apparel or jeans and cargo materials. She has an urban style that translates well from coast to coast and is always rocking her signature high ponytail during games. Although Ionescu doesn’t wear too many bright colors, she has a star-like quality both on and off the court.

Leading up to her first All-Star experience, Las Vegas Aces player Kelsey Plum has been ramping up her game. Powered by her quick thinking, she excites fans by landing those last-minute shots and bringing killer outfits all season. Working with stylist Sydney Bordonaro, Plum has a cool look with wide-legged pants, crop tops, and strong, structured tops. Although she rocks minimal accessories and isn’t too experimental, Plum is highlighted on fashion pages like LeagueFits and GQSports for her balanced outfits. Plum’s style is also accessible, as she often mixes pieces from Urban Outfitters or PrettyLittleThing with designer investments from Prada, Fendi, and Louis Vuitton.

Making her All-Start debut, Jackie Young has had a stand-out season with the Las Vegas Aces as one of the team’s top-scoring players. Developing her defense by being matched up with legendary players, Young is an efficient player with a focused and bold sense of fashion. Young has built outfits that show off her favorite pieces from Black designers like Heron Preston and Off White throughout the season. A bit of a preppy twist to her streetwear-heavy style may stem from her time playing college ball. Whether Young wears a dress or a hip pair of sweatpants, she exudes confidence in her fashion choices.
