Get up here! Let’s dance! Week 2 of the WNBA season is in the books. Thirty-point performances were being dealt à la Oprah, and one bucketgetter even went for 40. The stars were out to witness all the greatness, and the stars on the court delivered. After two weeks of play, here are my power rankings.
Stats and analysis as of Sunday, May 26.
1. Connecticut Sun (5-0)
- Previous Ranking: 3
- Last Week: W at Fever 88-84, W vs. Lynx 83-82 OT, W at Sky 86-82
- This Week: Tuesday vs. Mercury, Friday vs. Wings, Sunday at Dream
- Team Stats: OffRtg: 107.4 (2); DefRtg: 98.0 (4); NetRtg: 9.4 (2); eFG%: 48.8 (7)
The Sun’s physicality is tough to beat, and maybe that’s why no one has done it yet. The lone undefeated team in the league is being led by their 14-year vet, DeWanna Bonner. She’s been otherworldly, averaging just over 20 points per game at 36 years old. Thirty-six!
Saturday’s match-up against Chicago was eventful, to say the least. Alyssa Thomas earned a flagrant-2 ejected on a hard play against Angel Reese in a playoff-like atmosphere. That win against the Sky was the third straight Sun victory by four points or less.
2. Las Vegas Aces (3-1)
- Previous Ranking: 1
- Last Week: L vs. Mercury 88-98, W vs. Fever 99-80
- This Week: Wednesday at Lynx, Friday at Atlanta
- Team Stats: OffRtg: 109.9 (1); DefRtg: 102.4 (8); NetRtg: 7.5 (4); eFG%: 50.7 (3)
Thanks to the Mercury, Las Vegas earned their first loss of the season on Tuesday night. There were slow starts even in the two games they won last week. They have let teams keep it close in the first half, but then it’s like they wake up and realize, “Oh yeah, we’re the back-to-back champs.”
I might sound like a broken record, but still, it’s glaringly obvious how much the reigning champs are missing Chelsea Gray. For now, though, it’s been point guard by committee. Jackie Young has played the most minutes at the one spot and is top-three in the league in assists.
But let’s talk about the A’ja Wilson for a moment. Wilson had 29 points and 15 rebounds in Saturday’s win over Indiana, her 80th career double-double. That performance tied the WNBA record with four straight 20+ point, 10+ rebound games, and she became the first player in WNBA history with 100 points and 50 rebounds through four games of a season. Wild!
3. Minnesota Lynx (4-1)
- Previous Ranking: 4
- Last Week: L at Sun 82-83 OT, W vs. Liberty 84-67
- This Week: Wednesday vs. Aces, Friday vs. Mercury, Sunday vs. Wings
- Team Stats: OffRtg: 102.8 (7); DefRtg: 91.2 (1); NetRtg: 11.6 (1); eFG%: 54.3 (1)
Minnesota’s Big 3 are off to a blazing start as they picked up two wins this week, including over New York. Alanna Smith has been a huge x-factor for Minnesota. Her 16 points per game on nearly 55% percent shooting is only half of it. She continues to find ways to help her team. What Smith brings in energy and steadfastness proves that this was one of the league’s best off-season signings.
Smith’s ability to stretch the floor (64% from 3-point land) has made it a nightmare match-up. Especially when your all-star, Napheesa Collier, has been playing out of her mind. This was displayed in Lynx’s one-point overtime loss to Connecticut last week, where Collier finished with 31.
And Kayla “McBuckets” McBride had 31 points on a whopping 85% from beyond the arc in Sunday’s win over Atlanta. She didn’t miss a shot until three minutes to go in the game. Are you kidding me?
4. NY Liberty (4-2)
- Previous Ranking: 2
- Last Week: W vs. Storm 74-63, L vs. Sky 81-90, L at Lynx 67-84
- This Week: Wednesday vs. Mercury, Friday vs. Mystics, Sunday vs. Fever
- Team Stats: OffRtg: 103.7 (5); DefRtg: 95.5 (3); NetRtg: 8.3 (3); eFG%: 50.1 (5)
Two not-so-pretty losses this week put NY in the fourth spot. Chicago proved their near-50 win over the Liberty in the preseason wasn’t a fluke, handing NY their first loss on Thursday. The Sky’s aggressiveness doesn’t match up well with the Liberty. They struggled, which carried over to a double-digit loss against Minnesota on Saturday.
There’s something we can’t quite put our finger on about this team. It might have to do with perimeter defense. Sabrina Ionescu was a whopping -27 in the loss against the Lynx. I think Coach Sandy Brondello should give rookie Marquesha Davis more minutes. Her athleticism could jump some passing lanes and ignite a spark for the Liberty’s second unit.
5. Phoenix Mercury (3-2)
- Previous Ranking: 7
- Last Week: W at Aces 98-88, W vs. Mystics 83-80
- This Week: Tuesday at Sun, Wednesday at Liberty, Friday at Lynx, Sunday vs. Sparks
- Team Stats: OffRtg: 104.3 (4); DefRtg: 106.9 (11); NetRtg: -2.6 (9); eFG%: 50.8 (2)
Kahleah Copper looks incredible to start the season for the Mercury. She became the first player ever to record back-to-back 37+ point games. Then, in a loss against the Wings on Saturday, Copper earned her third 30-point game of the season (read: in eight calendar days). She’s currently leading the W in scoring.
The Mercury upset the Aces by raining it from beyond the arc (16-33) despite three Vegas players with 20+. That confidence carrier over to a gritty win against Washington.
Whatever fountain of youth Diana Taurasi is drinking from, she may want to sell it by the bottle. She’s had six or more 3-pointers in a game twice this season. My goodness.
It’ll be a tough week ahead as they hit the road against the top three teams in my rankings. We’ll see how they fair. Something to monitor: Rebecca Allen left Saturday’s game early with a head injury and did not return.
6. Atlanta Dream (2-2)
- Previous Ranking: 5
- Last Week: W vs Wings 83-78, L vs Lynx 79-92
- This Week: Wednesday at Mystics, Friday vs Aces, Sunday vs. Sun
- Team Stats: OffRtg: 105.3 (3); DefRtg: 105.6 (10); NetRtg: -0.3 (8); eFG%: 50.4 (4)
The Dream kicked off their week by getting the win over Arike and the Wings — their first victory over Dallas since 2022. Allisha Gray finished with a smooth 21 points. Her shot creation has elevated this season, which could be due to her winning Athlete’s Unlimited Pro Hoops in March.
Defensive effort has now come into question, ranking 10th in DefRtg. In their loss against Minnesota on Sunday, Atlanta was outscored in the third quarter 26-12. It’s a crucial upcoming week for the Dream with games against both the Aces and Sun. They’ll need to bounce back big time to move up the ranks.
7. Seattle Storm (3-3)
- Previous Ranking: 6
- Last Week: L at Liberty 63-74, W vs. Fever 85-83
- This Week: Monday at Sky, Thursday at Fever
- Team Stats: OffRtg: 96.7 (9); DefRtg: 94.6 (2); NetRtg: 2.1 (7); eFG%: 46.0 (12)
After Monday’s loss against New York, Seattle bounced back in front of their sold-out home crowd versus Indiana. Jewell Loyd straight-up put on a show. I sat back and watched in awe of her 32-point, 11-rebound, six-assist thrilling performance. She was cutting up the defense like Edward Scissorhands.
The Storm ended their week with a 32-point win over the Mystics Saturday night. Five players (!) finished in double figures, including a team-high 19 points from Nneka Ogwumike. Skylar Diggins-Smith also came alive with 16 points and nine assists. They’re on their way! The team’s swagger is budding — respect Noelle Quinn’s gangsta.
Also, I couldn’t not mention this iconic tunnel fit by rookie Nika Muhl. After finally having her work visa approved, Muhl made her debut against Indiana to a roaring applause. She’s yet to score on the court, but the tunnel fits are shooting 100 percent from the field, OK?
8. Dallas Wings (3-2)
- Previous Ranking: 8
- Last Week: L at Dream 78-83, W at Mercury 107-92, W at Sparks 84-83
- This Week: Friday at Sun, Sunday at Lynx
- Team Stats: OffRtg: 103.1 (6); DefRtg: 100.7 (6); NetRtg: 2.4 (6); eFG%: 47.2 (10)
Arike Ogunbowale. That’s the tweet. At the top of the season, I questioned how Dallas would stay afloat without Satou Sabally. Silly me. Arike has built the raft her damn self. Her first 40-piece of the season (it won’t be her last) came Saturday against the Mercury. She went NBA2K mode in front of NBA star Kevin Durant.
But Arike isn’t notching these wins along. Maddy Seigriest’s game has improved immensely. She exploded for 22 points against the Mercury and again for 15 against the Sparks. It’s not a coincidence the Wings won both of those games.
Also, what a brilliant move to sign Monique Billings to a hardship contract. She’s been sensational. She’s racked up 30 rebounds and 56 points in her first full week. Billings promised hustle to the Wings fanbase — hustling for rebounds, on defense, up the floor. And she’s more than delivered.
9. Chicago Sky (2-2)
- Previous Ranking: 9
- Last Week: W at Liberty 90-81, L vs. Sun 82-86
- This Week: Monday vs. Storm, Thursday vs. Sparks, Saturday at Fever
- Team Stats: OffRtg: 102.8 (8); DefRtg: 99.7 (5); NetRtg: 3.1 (5); eFG%: 46.4 (11)
The first word that comes to mind: FUN. Yes, all caps. Teresa Weatherspoon high-stepping down the sideline. Chennedy Carter’s speedy transition buckets. Angel Reese making this face after an And-1 on Breanna Stewart. A whole lotta fun.
Chicago had a great week, upsetting the New York Liberty and going neck and neck with the Connecticut Sun. Carter fouled out at the top of the fourth quarter, and the Sun’s Alyssa Thomas was ejected. The Sky has the pieces to give top teams a run for their money. I don’t see them staying this far down the rankings for long.
10. Los Angeles Sparks (1-4)
- Previous Ranking: 10
- Last Week: W vs. Mystics 70-68, L vs Fever 78-73, L vs. Wings 83-84
- This Week: Tuesday at Fever, Thursday at Sky, Sunday at Mercury
- Team Stats: OffRtg: 96.3 (10); DefRtg: 101.2 (7); NetRtg: -4.9 (10); eFG%: 49.1 (6)
Only one win this week for the Sparks, but they’re so close. All three games were within five points or less. The good news for the Sparks: They set a franchise record with an attendance of 19,103 at Crypto.com arena on Friday night versus the Fever. The atmosphere was electric. Celebrities dotted courtside, and the on-court product matched the energy.
An area where LA still needs to grow is its bench production. Sunday was better (27 bench points), but there has been a trend of a stark dip when the reserves sub in.
In Sunday’s loss, Cameron Brink scored a career-high in scoring (19) and tied Brittney Griner and Elena Baranova for most blocks (16) through five career WNBA games. Not too shabby for a rook.
11. Indiana Fever (1-6)
- Previous Ranking: 11
- Last Week: L vs Sun 84-88, L at Storm 83-85, W at Sparks 78-73, L at Aces 80-99
- This Week: Tuesday vs. Sparks, Thursday vs Storm, Saturday vs Sky
- Team Stats: OffRtg: 94.9 (11); DefRtg: 111.1 (12); NetRtg: -16.2 (12); eFG%: 48.4 (8)
The Fever got their first win of the season against the LA Sparks on Friday night, and Caitlin Clark flirted with a triple-double. But I wanted to shoutout forward Temi Fagbenle. Saturday against the Aces, Fagbenle earned the starting spot over NaLyssa Smith because she’s been balling. Running the floor is a lost art, and her hustle is paying off. Through the first six games, on the court: +12 in 132 minutes, and off the court: -81 in 108 minutes. Crazy.
Also, how cute was that Iowa reunion between Clark and Kate Martin? Martin said it’s the longest they haven’t been together in four years!
12. Washington Mystics (0-6)
- Previous Ranking: 12
- Last Week: L vs. Storm 75-84, L at Sparks 70-68, L at Mercury 80-83, L at Storm 69-101
- This Week: Wednesday vs. Dream, Friday at Liberty
- Team Stats: OffRtg: 91.8 (12); DefRtg: 104.1 (9); NetRtg: -12.3 (11); eFG%: 47.3 (9)
Still winless in D.C., but I have my eye on Julie Vanloo. Vanloo has stepped up with timely baskets and dimes without Brittney Sykes and with Shakira Austin on injury restrictions. The 31-year-old Belgian rookie averaged 13 points a game this week, and her leadership prowess shined through. The United States is the 10th country she has played in at the club level since 2012. She’s maximizing her WNBA dreams; the Mystics need every bit of it.
