INDIANA FEVER 62, CHARLOTTE STING 53
WNBA.com Recap | Box Score
The Sting put up a tough battle in Indianapolis but in the end could not find the answer to their road woes as they fell to the Fever 62-53.
Charlotte (4-27) shot 43.9% from the field compared to 38.3% by Indiana (19-12) but the Sting could not stop the inside of play of the Fever's Tamika Catchings and Natalie Williams as both finished with double-doubles. Catchings posted a game-high 18 points and 16 rebounds (10 offensive) while Williams recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds. Indiana also dominated the battle of the boards grabbing 39 rebounds compared to 22 by the Sting.
Sheri Sam posted 15 points to lead the Sting while Tangela Smith chipped in nine.
Both teams came out of the gate a little slow as they struggled to find their range over the first 3:42. With the score tied at five at the 16:18 mark, the Fever caught fire, connecting on five of their next seven shots to spark a 13-3 run to build a 10-point lead. Charlotte answered with their own 6-0 run to cut the deficit to four before Catchings scored four quick points to push the lead back to eight. The Fever would maintain a six to eight point advantage over the next 5:56 before a driving lay-up by Catchings pushed the lead back to 10 with 3:10 left in the period. Sam would hit a jump shot as time expired to cut the Sting's deficit at halftime under double digits (35-26).
The Sting came out quickly in the second half as Jia Perkins hit a lay-up and Helen Darling connected on two free throws to make the score 35-30. The run was short-lived however as the Fever answered, pushing their lead back to nine with 17:59 left in the game. Down by 10 (45-35) with 14:35 remaining, Sam scored eight points to spark a 11-3 run that pulled the Sting to within three. Following a jump shot by Indiana's Williams, Smith connected on a three-point play to cut Charlotte's deficit to just two (51-49) with 9:06 left on the clock. It was here that the Charlotte's offense went ice cold as they connected on just one field goal and two free throws the remainder of the way enabling the Fever to finish the contest on an 11-4 run.
HEAD COACH MUGGSY BOGUES SAYS...
(On the game)
We played hard tonight but we cant give up 21 offensive rebounds. It made
it a long night.
INSIDE THE STING LOCKER ROOM
SHERI SAM (15 Pts, 4 Rebs)
(On the Fevers rebounding)
That was the game right there. At a crucial point in the game they got 2-3
shots and then a 3 point play. It has been the little things like that, that
have nagged us all year. Catchings was all over the boards, 10 offensive
rebounds gave them 10 extra possessions right there.
