Sutton-Brown Participates in Reading Timeout
Tammy Sutton-Brown, a third-year center for the Charlotte Sting, spent some time with five classes of third graders at Oakhurst Elementary on June 9, 2003.
Standing 6-4 and seeming like a giant herself, the classes listened as Tammy read "The Rude Giants" by Audrey Wood.
Afterward, the children were able to ask Tammy questions about playing basketball in the WNBA and life in general.
The reading timeout is a part of the WNBA's Read to Achieve program, a year-round, league-wide initiative supported by all 29 NBA teams, 14 WNBA teams, and 8 NBDL teams. Read to Achieve promotes the value of reading and on-line literacy and encourages families and adults to read regularly with young children. The program includes the annual donation of more than 200,000 books, as well as the development of essay contests and on-line programs and the creation of Reading and Learning centers.
