Megan Frazee Talks About Her Faith

Faith Night is coming to the AT&T Center on Friday, June 11. Silver Stars forward Megan Frazee recently sat down with Sasilverstars.com to talk about what faith means to her.

Megan Frazee
Sasilverstars.com - How did your faith become such an important part of your life?

Megan Frazee - Growing up I was able to see my parents live out their faith. I remember starting to go to church with them at a really young age. They were both teachers who taught at a Christian school and I was in a Christian school from kindergarten through 12th grade. The biggest thing for me was observing my parents in the way that they lived out their faith and how that taught my siblings and myself the importance of being grounded in the Lord and how to rely on Him. From a young age was when it started to be really important to me since I grew up around it. I asked Jesus into my heart when I was five and it took off from there.

SAS - Why is your faith still important to you as an adult?

MF - I think this world has a lot of ups and downs, thats how life is. For me, I know my faith has really helped me get through those low times and also during the best times it really makes me thankful that I have someone who is going to be with me through the thick and the thin. I think my perspective on things is different. Sure, I play the game of basketball but I want to be known as someone who follows after the Lord. I think having Him in my life has made a huge difference for me.

SAS - Did your extended family play a role in the development of your faith?

MF - The Lord really blessed me with great parents and siblings as well, but I also had the chance to see both sets of my grandparents walk with the Lord. I think at a young age you have a certain perspective but as you get older you gain a different perspective through experience. Having the example of my parents and how my grandparents raised them is neat to see. The way I saw my parents handle my siblings and I really made me want to have that as well.

SAS - As someone who is passionate about their faith in God, describe what the connection between Antioch Baptist Church (where the team practices) and the team means to you.

MF - When I first came here before training camp last year I got into town a little bit early and I didnt know exactly what the whole set up was with where we practiced. I thought it was really neat that we have this gym that is connected to the church and I know one of the first things that they do is have some of their members come in and make a meal to welcome us. Its the little things like that really make me feel blessed.

SAS - How is having a night like Silver Stars Faith and Family Night important to the organization and to the community?

MF - I think having a night like this gives those of us who have a relationship with Him and those who might be searching for a chance to know that there is something more important out there is important. For me personally, my faith is a huge part of my life so just having a night to recognize God is something I think is great. After all, He created us and gave us the abilities that we have.

SAS - Along with Faith and Family Night, why is Dads and Daughters Night important to you?

MF - My dad is definitely someone who has had a huge impact on my life. Even when it comes to basketball, my dad was there for me when I was young. With my dad being a teacher and a coach, I was able to come to his practices and just shoot on the sidelines. He got me into basketball and coached my sisters and I throughout our entire lives. He was just huge in that area and I spent a lot time with him in the area of basketball. My dad also is very important to me for the things he did at our home. Seeing him as he led our house and the example of his life, lifestyle and how he lived is something that I cherish to this day. I feel like I have the best dad in the world.

SAS - How does faith play a role with the Silver Stars as a team?

MF - This is definitely a neat team to be on because there are a lot of Christians on the team. It has been neat for me coming from college and moving into the professional level. I went to a Christian college and then to come here and be surrounded by a lot of Christian girls is great. We try to have a bible study once a week. Whether its just listening to a sermon online or something else, we try to meet and share with each other our hearts and our burdens. Before every single game after the coaches talk to us, we have a time where we give thanks. There is a moment of silence to pray and try to get focused on the game. Its neat to be a part of because I know it doesnt happen everywhere.

SAS - Were you surprised to come to the Silver Stars and find this many women on the team have placed the same importance on their faith as you have?

MF - I had an idea just because I knew some of the coaches before I came to the WNBA and they gave me an idea and a feel for what this team is about. I know the front office tries to bring in not just talented players but good people off the court as well. I knew it was going to be a special team and a little bit different than maybe some other places. I feel blessed to be here and be a part of it.

SAS - Can you describe how your faith translates to your desire to be involved in the San Antonio community?

MF - One of the biggest verses that I like is, Whatever you do, work at it with all of your heart as if you are working for the Lord and not for man. When I look at that verse and how I can apply that to my personal life, it makes me want to give it my all on the basketball court whether its by playing or by cheering on the sideline. I think this also applies in everyday life, whether you are helping someone out or just trying to do whatever needs to be done. For me, my faith is huge in my life and something I try to live out everyday and its not necessarily verbally but also through my actions.
