Larry B. Bloggin' #8 - Tracking Ticha

TICHA PENICHEIRO doubled her fun recently when she put up 16 points in the Sparks loss to Minnesota and then followed it up by dropping 23 (16 in the third quarter) on the Tulsa Shock to help the Sparks get back on the winning track last Tuesday at Staples Center.

Throughout her career, Ticha has always been known more as a great passer (she is the WNBAs all-time leader in assists) than as a scorer, so it made me wonder if she had ever had back-to-back games when she scored double-digit points. I put that challenge to Sparks Media Relations Coordinator, Patrick Hayes, and he came up with some interesting numbers.

There were two times, in Tichas 14-season career, that she had streaks of five consecutive games scoring in double-digits. Both of those came in 2008 when she was with the Sacramento Monarchs.

Those 39 combined points in back-to-back games (16p v MN/ 23p v Tulsa) were not a total rarity either. Ticha matched that total in 2002 when, interestingly enough, she scored 16 points against Minnesota (sound familiar?) and followed that up with 23 points(hmmm?) in a game against the Liberty.

There must be something about Minnesota that brings out the scorer in Ticha. In 1999, she put up eight points against the Orlando Miracle (now Connecticut Sun) and came back with 27 in the next game against (you guessed it) the Minnesota Lynx.

In case you are wondering that 27-point effort was Tichas career high for a single game. Her career high average for a single season came in 2007 when she averaged 8.6 points per game in 32 starts for the Monarchs.

T Time
Congratulations to Teresa Edwards for her induction to the Basketball Hall of Fame. She is s true American hero and a great ambassador for the game. Her acceptance speech was excellent and, to top it off, Teresa was presented to the Hall by our good friends Ann Meyers-Drysdale and Charles Barkley. T is now the interim head coach of the Tulsa Shock, taking over midseason when Nolan Richardson stepped down. The Sparks will see Edwards and the Shock three more times before the end of the regular season.

And congratulations to Tamika Catchings who joined the elite 5,000-point club over the weekend. We will see T.C. and the Indiana Fever this Thursday night, August 18th, at STAPLES Center.
