June 7, 1999
The WNBA announces it will expand the league by four teams, choosing Miami, Indiana, Portland and Seattle as the sites. Each city will be given a team if it raises 5,500 season ticket deposits by October 15.

June 8, 1999
At a press conference held at LaSalle High School, HEAT President and Head Coach Pat Riley formally recognizes the arrival of the WNBA in South Florida.

June 15, 1999
As a special Father's Day gift to South Florida, the WNBA announces that all baby girls born on Sunday, June 20, in South Florida will receive two season tickets to the inaugural 2000 season.

July 16, 1999
Kim Stone is announced as the Senior Director of Miami WNBA Operations.

August 11, 1999
A ring of $5 season tickets encircling the entire lower bowl of the AmericanAirlines Arena is made available to fans looking for the best value in South Florida team sports.

August 17, 1999
Advertrailer and affiliate Roadway team up to donate 10 Miami WNBA tickets to the Miami Shores Summer Recreation program, putting the team over the 2,000 ticket-deposit mark.

September 1, 1999
Coca-Cola, AT&T Cable Services, Office Depot, Lucent Technologies, Cyberguard and American Power Conversion purchase season tickets, pushing the Miami WNBA team past the halfway mark to the league-mandated 5,500 season ticket deposits.

September 23, 1999
Arriving at the Miami WNBA press conference by way of jet-ski, then-HEAT guard Tim Hardaway announces he and his family have put the team over 4,500 season ticket deposits.

September 30, 1999
As part of the "Don't Drop the Ball" Campaign to reminding South Floridians to purchase season tickets by October 15th, Mayor Alex Penelas passes the WNBA ball to David Lawrence, Jr., former publisher of The Miami Herald and president of Early Childhood Initiative at Florida International University.

October 1, 1999
The Miami WNBA partners with Cancer Link to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month at the University of Miami's Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Supporters paid $1 per free throw and for every shot they made -- up to five per person -- the Miami WNBA donated $5 to Cancer Link. The event raised $2,170 for research.

October 7, 1999
Basketball stars Tracy Reid and Dalma Ivanyi take a shot against breast cancer at the "For the Love of Women" event at Sawgrass Mills mall. The Miami WNBA donates $2,500 to the American Cancer Society and GILDA'S CLUB to promote breast cancer awareness.

October 8, 1999
Miami Heat Head Coach Pat Riley announces the selection of Ron Rothstein as General Manager and Head Coach for the Miami WNBA team.

October 14, 1999
Miami's bid for a Women's National Basketball Association team finishes in a frenzy, as team management announces it has secured 6,190 ticket deposits for the Miami WNBA team's inaugural season -- 690 more than required by the league. The historic announcement is made at The Old Schoolhouse in Coral Gables where the first female schoolteacher in Miami -- Flora McFarlane -- taught starting in 1889.

November 3, 1999
General Manager and Head Coach Ron Rothstein names Tony Fiorentino and Jenny Boucek as assistant coaches and Marynell Meadors as director of scouting.

December 15, 1999
The Miami WNBA acquires its first players through four draft picks and two trades during the WNBA Expansion Draft. Guards Debbie Black and Sandy Brondello and forwards Elena Baranova, Lesley Brown, Sharon Manning and Yolanda Moore become the first six Miami WNBA players.

January 7, 2000
The Miami WNBA franchise unveils its team name and logo at the AmericanAirlines Arena. The team name -- SOL -- is from the Spanish word meaning "sun." The SOL logo uses the traditional Miami HEAT red and yellow to develop the sun with an accent of black for the word "Miami" and around the word "SOL." The oatmeal and orange WNBA basketball is incorporated inside the letter "O." The United States Women's Basketball Team is on hand for the announcement after playing in a free public scrimmage.

January 18, 2000
The SOL announces its inaugural season schedule, opening with a nationally televised game against the Indiana Fever on June 1.

April 14, 2000
In a trade with Minnesota, the SOL acquires Marlies Askamp.

April 25, 2000
The SOL acquires Jameka Jones, Milena Flores and Shantia Owens in the WNBA Draft.

April 26, 2000
The SOL holds open tryouts at Barry University in Miami Shores. Nearly 200 hopefuls compete in the tryouts with six selected to attend invitational tryouts the next day.

May 3, 2000
SOL Training camp opens at Palm Beach Atlantic College with a roster of 18 players. Media day is held between practices to unveil uniforms and introduce players to the public.

May 13, 2000
The SOL plays its first exhibition game in franchise history at Gund Arena against the Cleveland Rockers, dropping a 75-66 decision.

May 20, 2000
The SOL plays its first home exhibition game against the three-time defending WNBA champion Houston Comets and falls 84-52 at the AmericanAirlines Arena.

June 1, 2000
The SOL opens the 2000 season with its first regular season game and first ever home game, facing the expansion Indiana Fever at the AmericanAirlines Arena. In a nationally televised game on Lifetime, the SOL falls 57-54. SOL firsts include: first points by Shantia Owens with an eight-foot jumper, three-point shot by Debbie Black, assist by Black to Marlies Askamp, foul by Umeki Webb, turnover by Shantia Owens, free throw by Katrina Colleton, steal by Askamp, substitution by Milena Flores replacing Black and double-double by Askamp with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Guard Sheri Sam, who was waived by the Orlando Miracle May 28th, is picked up by SOL prior to game time. Miami's mascot Solee, a yellow and red oversized parrot, is hatched at halftime in front of 11,212 fans at AmericanAirlines Arena.

June 3, 2000
The SOL records its first franchise win with a 74-63 overtime victory over the Charlotte Sting at the Charlotte Coliseum.

June 11, 2000
Meet the SOL at The Shops at Sunset Place is held for fans to meet with players and coaches, as well as receive autographs.

June 13, 2000
The SOL posts its first home win in the AmericanAirlines Arena with a 74-61 victory over the Detroit Shock behind 17 points from Sheri Sam.

Rookie Kristen Rasmussen, a 6-2 forward, is picked up off waivers prior to game-time.

June 23, 2000
Breast Health Awareness night is held during a game against the Los Angeles Sparks at the AmericanAirlines Arena. The SOL teamed up with HealthSouth, Sears, the WNBA and the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations (NABCO) for the event as players, coaches and fans wear pink Breast Health Awareness shirts and specially designed ribbons to show their support.

July 30, 2000
The SOL becomes the first 2000 expansion team to reach 10 wins with a 64-51 victory over the Seattle Storm.

August 9, 2000
The SOL completes its inaugural season in dramatic fashion with a 68-54 double overtime win over the Orlando Miracle at the AmericanAirlines Arena. The SOL finishes the season with a 13-19 mark -- best among the four expansion teams.

August 10, 2000
Forward Sharon Manning announces her WNBA retirement after four years in the WNBA and one year with the SOL.

November 7, 2000
The SOL acquires Miami native and 1998 WNBA Rookie of the Year Tracy Reid from the Charlotte Sting in exchange for Shantia Owens.

February 5, 2001
The SOL celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day with players and staff hosting more than 300 students from Miami-Dade County at the AmericanAirlines Arena.

April 20, 2001
The SOL selects NCAA Player of the Year Ruth Riley from Notre Dame with the fifth pick in the WNBA Draft. The team also acquired guard Marla Brumfield in a trade with Minnesota and drafts center Levys Torres from Florida State.

April 26, 2001
Six SOL players visit nine different businesses on "Take Your Daughter to Work Day." The players meet with the employees and their daughters at the offices to discuss what it took to become a pro basketball player and the opportunities for women in sports. The businesses were chosen from hundreds of registrants in the "Take a SOL Player to Work" contest that asked fans to describe the significance of "Take Your Daughter to Work Day" to them.

The SOL opens its second season with a 68-59 win over the defending Eastern Conference champion New York Liberty.

July 11, 2001
Forward Elena Baranova is named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team, becoming the first SOL player named to the All-Star game.

July 16, 2001
Forward Elena Baranova records 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocks for the Eastern Conference in her All-Star game debut.

July 23, 2001
Forward Sheri Sam is named the WNBA Player of the Week after leading the SOL to three victories during the week, averaging 17.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals.

August 3, 2001
The SOL clinches a playoff spot with a 72-61 win over the Phoenix Mercury at the AmericanAirlines Arena. Miami becomes the only expansion team from 2000 to qualify for the playoffs.

August 14, 2001
The SOL completes its second regular season with a 20-12 record.

August 17, 2001
Guard Debbie Black is named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in steals with 2.56 per game. The SOL plays its first-ever playoff game, falling to the New York Liberty 62-46 in game one of the Eastern Conference semifinal series at the AmericanAirlines Arena.

August 19, 2001
The SOL wins a playoff game for the first time in its history, capturing a 53-50 win over the New York Liberty in game two of the Eastern Conference semifinal series at Madison Square Garden. Sheri Sam scored 15 of her team-high 17 points in the second half as the SOL overcame a 10-points second half deficit to rally for the win.

August 21, 2001
The SOL's second season comes to a close with a 72-61 loss to the New York Liberty at Madison Square Garden in game three of the Eastern Conference semifinal series.

September 24, 2001
Guard Sandy Brondello is named August's WNBA Hometown Hero for her dedication to service in the community.
