NBA Commissioner David Stern announces that Chicago will be awarded a new WNBA franchise.
The Sky announces former NBA player and coach Dave Cowens as the team's first head coach and general manager.
Chicago Sky team name and logo are formally debuted at the Alder Planetarium. Team President and CEO Margaret Stender describe the team colors of yellow and blue as "a beautiful day in Chicago between the blue sky and bright sunlight to highlight the spectacular skyline."
The Sky holds an expansion draft to help build its roster of players. Among the notable selections were Brooke Wyckoff from the Connecticut Sun and Bernadette Ngoyisa from the San Antonio Silver Stars. In total the Sky draft 13 players.
