Coach Nolan Richardson Reviews the 2011 WNBA Draft

General Manager and Head Coach Nolan Richardson along with assistant Coach Wayne Stehlik and Director of Player Personnel Teresa Edwards transported their draft war room from Tulsa, Oklahoma to ESPN Studios in Bristol, Connecticut for the 2011 WNBA Draft. After the draft, Coach Richardson discussed each pick and his overall thoughts on how the draft went for his squad.

On Elizabeth Cambage:

You wait till you get to see her. Shes an incredible woman. They were playing a song, she was dancing, she showed her moves on the floor. I thought I put the D in dancing but she put the A in it too.

I saw her briefly, I talked to her after the draft, I went down to do an interview and that way, shes a very strong built young lady and a very likeable person because of her smile.

She has soft hands, she may not be the biggest offensive threat right now but she will give us more defense than we have ever had.

2010 FIBA Championships: 13.6 points/5.4 rebounds/1.0 blocks/60% Field Goal/70% Free Throw/18.9 minutes/game
2010-11 Season With Bulleen Melbourne Boomers: 22.3 points/8.2 rebounds/2.7 blocks/59.9% Field Goal/72.9% Free Throw/25.2 minutes/game

On Kayla Pedersen:

Kayla is what I call an all-purpose player. I look at her as a female Larry Bird type player. She shoots the threes, she lays the ball in. Shes not as quick but shes smart and she can make up for quickness with her smarts. This young lady is not what you call slow either, shes smart and shes got a lot of basketball in her.

2010-11 Stats - 12.9 points/8.0 rebounds/3.2 assists/47.3 Percent FG/32.3 minutes/game.

On Italee Lucas:

Im going to say shes a two or a three. Shes a scorer and attacker that can shoot the three. Shes a tough little lady and she has some quickness. The draw fell our way a little bit, I think. She was a potential first rounder.

2010-11 Stats at the University of North Carolina - 15.8 points/2.9 rebounds/2.5 assists/49.2 Percent FG/28.2 minutes/game.

Chastity Reed:

I got a chance to watch Chasity in Little Rock. Shes a scorer. She can stick it in the hole. She was streaky last year but she can get you 20 or 25 points because she has that offensive mentality and she has a some size."

We came up here and got what we came for. We got a 6-8, 64, 5-8 and a 6-1. We beefed up in the height department.

I think this was Tulsas first chance at picking players. This is the first time we had picks in the first round and we had two of them. So overall, when you have a draft and you are able to get the players you really want, thats what I call a successful draft.
