Riquna Williams Leads Shock Past Sparks
Riquna Williams scored a career and Shock season-high 27 points off the bench on 11-of-21 from the field to propel the Shock to their largest victory of the season, 91-75, over the Los Angeles Sparks. at the BOK Center on June 26.
Williams' 27 points are the most scored by any rookie this season in the WNBA. Ivory Latta had 21 points and eight assists while Temeka Johnson added 11 points and seven assists to complement Williams' scoring outburst.
"Of course Riquna stepped up huge and had an unbelievable game with 27 points," Head Coach Gary Kloppenburg said. "I thought Amber Holt came in off the bench and really helped us scoring, rebounding and she had four assists as well. It was a rewarding effort after the tough games weve been through. It was very rewarding for us and hopefully weve got something we can build on right here.
After scoring 33 points and recording nine blocks against the Shock on June 20, the Shock held Candace Parker to a season-low two points in 21 minutes.
It always feels good to get a win but the way we won tonight is fantastic," Temeka Johnson said. "Riquna stepped up big. It was a collective effort against a very, very talented team. Im excited about it.
The Shock trailed 5-4 early in the game but finished the quarter on 13-2 run led by seven points from Williams. The Shock led 48-25 at the half, their biggest lead after two quarters this season.
We were leading the majority of the game and it feels so good because all that work that we did in practice and the games that weve lost by this much, it all pays off now," Glory Johnson said. "It all goes to our defense. Working on our defense thats what started it and the offense came. We played great defense and we got the ball, thats when our offense came so its really good.
The Shock shot a season-high 49.3 percent from the field while forcing 23 Sparks' turnovers. The Shock led by as many as 27 points in the game which was the organization's largest lead since the team moved to Tulsa in 2010.
Anytime you shoot almost 50 percent, 42 percent from threes, your energy on defense is rewarded," Kloppenburg said. "Thats the thing weve been struggling with is shooting the ball well. Weve been playing really tough defense. When the ball goes through the net like that, it energizes you at the other end. We just seemed like we got into a flow."
