Shock Waives Guard Stacy Clinesmith to Make Room for #7 Overall Pick in 2002 WNBA Draft
Shock Claims Guard Sheila Lambert
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. Detroit Shock Head Coach/Director of Player Personnel Bill Laimbeer announced today the club claimed guard Sheila Lambert off waivers and waived guard Stacy Clinesmith.
Sheila Laimbert was a player that the Shock organization was considering with the second overall pick last year until she got hurt that she is available now, and with her skills and her speed at playing the point we could not afford to pass up on her, said Laimbeer. It was a very tough choice, Stacy Clinesmith has done all that I have asked her to do and she is such a fine person, its unfortunate that is the nature of the business.
The 5-7 Lambert was selected by the Charlotte Sting in the first round (7th overall) of the 2002 WNBA Draft and waived by the Sting Wednesday, May 21st, 2003. Projected as a top-three pick, Lambert was chosen seventh overall after suffering a broken leg in the WBCA All-Star Game at the 2002 Final Four in San Antonio. After sitting out the first 20 games of the 2002 WNBA regular season rehabilitating her injured leg, Lambert played in just three of the teams final 12 regular season games. A native of Seattle, Wash., Lambert played collegiately at Baylor University, averaging 19.8 ppg, 6.5 apg, 4.4 rpg during her senior season while being named to the 2002-03 Kodak All-America First Team.
The Shock opens its 2003 WNBA regular season at The Palace Saturday, May 31st at 7:30 p.m. versus the 2002 WNBA Playoff Participant Charlotte Sting.
