Detroit Shock Receive Girl Scouts 2004 Woman of Distinction Award

The Girl Scouts of Macomb County-Otsikita Council honored the Detroit Shock at its 9th annual Woman of Distinction awards dinner on Tuesday, June 8th. The Shock was chosen to be a part of the prestigious awards banquet for their outstanding accomplishments on the court and in the community. The team and six other individual recipients were honored at the event that was held at Fernhill Country Club.

The annual Women of Distinction dinner recognizes women in the community who personify the Girl Scout spirit in their lives and work. The celebrated event draws more than 500 people to raise money to help keep Girl Scouting in Macomb County accessible and affordable for all girls. Candidates for the award were selected based on success in a position not traditionally held by woman, outstanding accomplishments in her field of endeavor, active involvement in community issues, or ability to influence the conditions of women and girls in Macomb County.

This year the Girl Scouts of Macomb County-Otsikita Council created a new group award in order to honor the 2003 WNBA Champion Detroit Shock. The teams award marked the first time in the events history that a group was honored for its achievements. Shock alumni Stacey Thomas was present at the event to receive the award on behalf of the team. The rest of the Shock were on the road for a game in Indianapolis on June 9th.

Besides having a Championship season the Detroit Shock are also extremely active in the community. The Shock are dedicated to creating and assisting community outreach programs that address issues of concern for fans and help improve their communities. They are involved in initiatives such as Breast Health Awareness, Read to Achieve, Steps to Success, and March of Dimes.

The event was co-emceed by Florine Mark, President and Chairman of the Board of The WW (Weight Watchers) Group, Inc., and author/public speaker Amyre Makupson (25 years on UPN/CBS Detroit).
