Gund Arena Company / Cleveland Cavaliers Will No Longer Operate the WNBA's Rockers
"We have enjoyed our association with the WNBA, but we have decided to forego the continued investment required to operate the Rockers. We will now focus all of our time, energy and effort on making the Cavaliers and Gund Arena as successful as possible," said Komoroski. "We want to extend our appreciation and thanks to Rockers fans for their relationship with the team over the last seven seasons."
The franchise's status for the 2004 season will be determined by the WNBA.
"We are grateful to Gordon Gund, the Cavaliers / Gund Arena organization and our loyal fans in Cleveland for their support over the past seven years as we have worked to build a national presence for women's professional basketball," said Ackerman. "Coming off the WNBAs most competitive season ever, and with a spectacular rookie class due to enter the league next season, we're looking forward to 2004 and remain confident about the WNBA's appeal to new owner groups and our prospects in new markets."
