Records Spinning In Houston: In one of the most memorable WNBA games of all-time, the Mercury captured a 111-110, triple-overtime win against the Comets. Diana Taurasi set the league's single-game scoring record by pouring in 47 points, including eight 3-pointers. She also tallied nine assists and grabbed six rebounds before fouling out in the second overtime. The previous single-game mark was 46 points set by former Lynx guard Katie Smith on July 8, 2001 against the Sparks. Taurasi's 17 field goals ties the league record set by Seattle's Lauren Jackson on August 6, 2003 against Los Angeles. The teams' combined 221 points were also a WNBA record, obliterating the old mark of 204 set on July 1, 2000 by the Monarchs and Shock.

ALSO MAKING HEADLINES ... Shock Move Closer: The Detroit Shock certainly showed that they are ready for postseason play with their 82-48 win over the Sky. The win decreased the Shock's "magic number" for clinching the East's second seed to one. One more Detroit win, or one Indiana loss will lock up the number two spot and ensure home-court advantage for the Shock in the first round. Guard Deanna Nolan led Detroit with 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Kara Braxton came off the bench to score 13 points and haul in 12 rebounds. After not reaching double-figure scoring for the season's first three months, she has already scored more than 10 points three times in August. |
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"This team just does a great job of pushing it and finding me in different spots. Today shots were going in. I felt pretty good. With the flow of the game, everybody got a lot of shots off. It was just fun to play."
-- Phoenix guard Diana Taurasi on the Mercury's play against the Comets.
