Candice Wiggins: Greece is the Word

Before coming to Athens, my knowledge of Greek culture consisted of various outlets of entertainment provided in the US: One of my favorite classes at Stanford entitled "Ancient Athletics", my favorite video game "God of War", Brad Pitt in the movie "Troy", and the more recent movie "300" (which I fell asleep in. Oops.) That was about it. And I have to say, so far I've been pleasantly surprised by everything in Greece. If I could describe the people here in one word it would absolutely be "hospitable". Everyone has been so welcoming, and the city of Athens itself is exciting. It's a modern city completely embedded in its rich history, and while there are thousands and thousands of books that can detail its ancient beginnings, it doesn't stop the millions of inhabitants from looking toward the future, which is pretty dope. It's really a fascinating place.

I have a smart car, and I love it. My only wish is that I could take it back to the States with me. Its incredible, and I can pretty much wrap my arms around the entire thing. Makes parking a thrill, how many people can say that?

I haven't learned the language, but fortunately there's enough English spoken throughout the country that you don't feel like a foreigner going anywhere. It makes it perfect for someone like me because it's difficult being in a foreign place when you feel isolated by language. Thanks to my sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, I already knew the entire Greek alphabet! (They really got a kick out of that). And I have learned how to count to eleven (Gotta know my jersey number!), as well as a few other things. It always provides entertainment for all the Greek players when I attempt words that I have no business trying to pronounce.

Speaking of my teammates, our team is great. We've set a lot of lofty goals for this season, and I'm very confident that we will achieve all of them. The Greek cup, the Euro FIBA Cup, and the Greek League championship. I'm excited to have the opportunity to be in the leadership role to get our team there.

I still haven't learned how to cook efficiently, and quite frankly, I might never. I just don't possess the "cooking" gene, I think. BUT. I have mastered calling in and ordering food from various Greek restaurants, and I'm proud of that.

I'll be sure to keep everyone posted on the progress of this season!

Until next time,

XOXO

Candice
