Reading Time Out: The Flower Garden

August 18, 2003 Lynx forward Tamika Williams read to preschool children at the La Creche Early Childhood Center in Minneapolis during a Lynx Reading Time Out.

Williams read "Flower Garden" by Eve Bunting to the children, then helped with an arts-and-crafts project. The students decorated paper flowers and flower pots to make their own flower gardens.

Williams, a second-year forward from the University of Connecticut, is on pace to set the all-time WNBA single-season record for field goal percentage. The 6-2 forward leads the league with a field goal mark of 67.0%.

In an effort to promote the importance of reading, online literacy and parent/child reading, the NBA, the WNBA, the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Minnesota Lynx have developed a year-round program called Read to Achieve. The program, which targets children ages 6-11, includes monthly reading events (Reading Time Outs), a local and national All-Star Reading Team, the development or refurbishing of reading centers, local book donations, public service announcements, interactive website activities and in-arena promotions.
