"The Shot" Named Greatest WNBA Moment

New York, NY - August 31, 2006 - WNBA fans across the country have solidified what longtime Liberty fans have always known: Teresa Weatherspoon's half-court shot in Game 2 of the 1999 WNBA Finals was the greatest memory ever. Or to be more specific, the WNBA Greatest Moment. Spoon's half-court buzzer-beating shot was named during half-time of last night's Game 1 of the WNBA Finals as the winner of the WNBA Greatest Moment, presented by AOL.com.

Since the launch of the program at the WNBA All-Star Game on July 12, fans have had an opportunity to log on to www.aol.com/wnba to vote for the greatest moments during the leagues first decade.

Initial voting was conducted in four distinct categories: Greatest Shot, Greatest Pass, Greatest Milestone and Greatest Inspirational Moment. The winner from each comprised the final ballot, with voting for the top moment taking place between August 9 and August 23.

Liberty fans well remember "The Shot." Spoon hit a miracle shot from half court on September 4 to win Game 2 of the 1999 WNBA Finals in Houston and send the series to a third and final game. That was named by fans in the intial voting as the Greatest Shot.

Weatherspoon's historic shot outshined a list of stellar WNBA moments to be named by fans as their favorite moment in WNBA history:

  • Greatest Pass Seattles Sue Bird leading a fast break during the 2003 All-Star Game and dropping a spectacular no-look pass between the legs to her trailing teammate, Lauren Jackson, for a score.
  • Greatest Milestone Lisa Leslie of the Los Angeles Sparks throwing down the first dunk in WNBA history against the Miami Sol on July 30, 2002.
  • Greatest Inspirational Moment Edna Campbell of the Sacramento Monarchs making a triumphant return to the court on August 13, 2002, after battling breast cancer.

This is something great, said Weatherspoon of the honor. That shot was certainly not done for individual accolades, but just gave the team one more game to go for the championship. Its certainly a nice thing to be remembered for.

Thank you Liberty fans for voting and recognizing this legendary moment in New York and WNBA history!
