NEW YORK, July 27 (Ticker) -- Michelle Snow came up big down the stretch
and the Houston Comets came up with a big win over the New York
Liberty.
Snow grabbed a pair of key rebounds in the final minute and
scored the game-winning basket with less than a second left as
the Comets defeated the Liberty, 71-69.
Houston (14-9) trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half
but fought back to tie the game at 69 on a three-point play by
Sheryl Swoopes with 47 seconds to play.
Crystal Robinson missed a jumper on New York's next possession
and Snow snared the rebound. Snow then grabbed an offensive
rebound off a miss by Janeth Arcain and her follow shot bounced
off the rim and in with three-tenths seconds to play.
Shameka Christon got off a desperation shot at the buzzer that
glanced harmlessly off the backboard for the Liberty (11-10),
who had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Swoopes scored 21 points, Tina Thompson added 17 and eight
rebounds and Snow chipped in 10 points and six boards for
Houston, which led 2-0 and not again until Snow's last-second
layup.
