WNBA.com Power Rankings: June 14, 2005
With the Shock dropping not one but two games in the previous week, we have a new team on top of the Power Rankings. We also see some considerable movement by several teams to keep things interested and more tightly packed than in previous weeks. In spite of it all, we still have two six-win teams, a seven-win team and two seven-loss teams to keep things somewhat separated and very interesting. Is it too late to go back and change playoff predictions? We won't tell if you don't.

NOTES | ||
1 |
| 6-1 | With
six wins in a row, the Connecticut Sun are the hottest team in the league and
the new leader in the clubhouse in this week's Rankings. Last week, the Sun registered
a huge win over the visiting Storm in a rematch of the 2004 WNBA Finals. Mike
Thibault's team continued to fire on all cylinders even as they headed out on
the road, winning games in Houston and San Antonio. Margo Dydek is proving that
she can fit in and Taj McWilliams-Franklin is doing everything and more in the
post. Upcoming: vs. Detroit, at Los Angeles
2 |
| 7-2 | The
Monarchs keep on rolling, winning again on Monday night at home against the Comets
to stay perfect at home. Had it not been for the loss to the Sparks last week,
the Monarchs could very well have been the top team in the Rankings. They are
also clicking on both ends of the court and getting production out of a number
of sources, but offseason acquisition Nicole Powell continues her breakout season. Upcoming: vs. Minnesota
3 |
| 5-2 | The
Shock had been the unquestioned team off to the best start, having been the last
team to lose a game. However, the 2003 champs drop from the top spot after cooling
off. After starting 4-0, the Shock lost at home to a weary and banged-up Storm
team. They then rebounded to win at home against the Sting, but then lost again
on Sunday to the Liberty in New York. Having lost two out of their last three
is bad, but they can right the ship against two of the other strongest teams in
the east in their upcoming contests. Upcoming: at Indiana, at Connecticut
4 |
| 6-3 | It
is really had to criticize the Storm, who went 2-2 on a tough road trip without
their team leader in less than a week, but 2-2 is still only .500. Sue Bird broke
bones in her face in a tough loss to the Sun on Tuesday, a game in which she and
teammate Betty Lennox got into it a bit. But the next night, the Storm handed
the Shock their first loss of the season in Detroit and showed the heart of a
champion. Friday night's loss to the Mystics was then followed by a dramatic last-second
win in Charlotte thanks to a layup with 0.1 seconds left in the game. The Storm
now head back home to recover. The Storm went 2-1 without Bird, but committed
57 turnovers. Upcoming: vs. Minnesota
5 |
| 5-3 | With
another win and loss, the Fever remain above the .500 mark and rooted in the top
half of the Eastern Conference standings. After losing on the road to the Monarchs,
Indiana saved a victory from the jaws of defeat on Friday night as Kelly Miller
hit a shot with 0:00.9 seconds remaining against the Liberty. The Fever are now
a perfect 4-0 at home and 3-0 against conference foes. The good news is that they
have two familiar rivals in their next two games. Upcoming: vs. Detroit, at Charlotte
6 |
| 4-3 | The
Lynx are moving up the big board with three consecutive wins. In Saturday's win
over the Mystics, their only game of the week, Katie Smith poured in 27 points
and three other Lynx players reached double digits. However, the true test will
come in their next three games against the other three Western Conference playoff
teams from the last season. True test, as tough a road trip as they will have
all season. Upcoming: at Seattle, at Sacramento, at L.A.
7 |
| 4-4 |
After starting out 4-1 and silencing the detractors, the Comets have dropped three
straight games. Monday's loss on the road to the Comets follows a 20-point loss
to the Sun at home. Granted those are the two top teams in the league so far this
season, but to be the best, you have to beat the best. Forward Sheryl Swoopes
knows a thing or two about that as she continues to put up MVP-type numbers, but
they could sure use Tina Thompson right about now... Upcoming: at Los Angeles, at San Antonio
8 |
| 4-4 | The
Sparks have yet to put together dominant performances in back-to-back games, thus
leaving them to hover in the middle of the pack for yet another week. But don't
count them out yet. While L.A. split their two games last week, including a loss
to the Mercury, they closed the week out strong and exacted some revenge at home
against Sacramento after an embarrassing loss to the Monarchs on ABC last week. Upcoming: vs. Houston, vs. Minnesota
9 |
| 3-4 | Another
team that has yet to put together consistent performances or win back-to-back
games, the Liberty also split their games this week, yet remain just a game under
.500 and a game ahead of Washington for fourth place. New York lost on the road
to the Fever on Friday night at the buzzer, but picked up a big win at home over
the Detroit Shock. Upcoming: vs. Phoenix, vs. San Antonio
10 |
| 3-6 | The
Mystics have been able to win big games against some of the toughest teams in
the league so far this season, just not enough of them. Won one and lost two in
the past week. Can't figure things out. Have a long break this week to practice
and forge a chemistry. This is a mini training camp for them with everyone now
healthy and ready to go. Upcoming: vs. Indiana
11 |
| 2-6 | The
Mercury finally looked like they had some answers in Wednesday's victory on the
Sparks, but were unable to sustain any momentum two nights later when they lost
in Sacramento. Diana Taurasi and company must right the ship in a hurry and put
an end to the losses or else they will quickly find themselves out of the playoff
picture. time is running out for the recently-returned players to shake off the
rust and get settled. Upcoming: vs. San Antonio, at New York
12 |
| 2-7 | San
Antonio is out of the bottom spot for the first time this season, moving up one
place. Perhaps winning is contagious in the SBC center as the Spurs are up 2-0
in the Finals. The Silver Stars moved up a spot by winning at home last week against
the Mystics, but are treading on thin ice. The improvement that they have shown
for stretches is still not prevalent on a consistent basis or manifesting itself
in the win column. But hey, it's a start. You can't go all the way to the top
in one week... Upcoming: at Phoenix, vs. Houston
13 |
| 1-7 | The
Sting really are not as bad as their record would indicate, but with only one
win so far on the season, it is impossible to put the Sting anywhere else in Rankings.
Charlotte did lose two games last week, including a heartbreaking loss to Seattle
on Sunday where the Storm put in a layup with 0.1 seconds to go in the game for
the win. After their game this Thursday with the Fever, the Sting will also have
a full week off to heal their wounds, sharpen their swords and get ready for the
next round of battles. Upcoming: vs. Indiana |
