Season Outlook

Don't sleep on the Silver Stars.

Sluggish out of the gate this season, the San Antonio Silver Stars have more than rebounded by playing some stellar basketball during the last month of the first half. Point guard Becky Hammon and forward Sophia Young paced the team to an impressive nine-game winning streak to end the first half that could very well grow once the team resumes.

How has San Antonio been able to do this? Hammon credits the streak to the team's almost psychic chemistry.

"Everyone's just been giving us huge lifts," Hammon said after the team's last game before the Olympics break. "We're starting to feel each other out and knowing who's doing what before they do it. It's a really fun way to play when you're making reads of each other like that."

Coach Dan Hughes, the architect behind the team's successes this season, said the team's deep and versatile bench has been able to carry the team night after night.

"There's so many good teams in the WNBA, but the unique part about us is our bench can put pressure on both ends of the court," Hughes said after the team's last game. "When you talk about pro basketball, you talk about scorers, defenders and spacers on the floor. We're able to do all of that on the court because our players are willing to do whatever."

The Silver Stars are poised to be tough playoff contenders this year but the race to the top means shutting down the Los Angeles Sparks and the Minnesota Lynx in the process, by no means an easy task. The Western Conference is heavily stacked this year and it's shaping up to be a thrilling stretch run.

Player to Watch

Sophia Young has stepped it up this season.

The six-year WNBA vet has put up near-MVP numbers for the Silver Stars, leading the team in points (16.7), rebounds (7.3) and steals (2.5) per game this season.

Young's aggressive style of play has suited Becky Hammon's streetball panache well, making them two one of the most exciting duos to watch on the court this season. Expect Young, alongside Hammon, to continue to tear it up once the season resumes.
