2004 WNBA Dispersal Draft Recap

Back in January, the WNBA held Dispersal Draft of Cleveland Rockers players. Sixteen players were available to be selected in the one-round draft, including those players who did not play last season, but to whom the Rockers had negotiating rights. Teams drafted in inverse order of their regular-season finish in 2003, meaning Phoenix had the first pick, and selected 6-1 forward Penny Taylor.

Penny Taylor
On Penny Taylor:
"She is an all-star, a top-caliber player, a great three-point shooter, which we really need as you can never have enough of. She is a great open-court player, an Olympian, and she has a lot of experience."
-Adrian Williams, Phoenix Mercury

Chasity Melvin
On Chasity Melvin:
"She brings countless things. We are really disappointed that Cleveland folded, but we will gain from that disappointment. Chasity Melvin is part of that missing piece that we need to win a WNBA championship. We needed a 5, and she brings physicality, she brings intelligence, and she brings touch around the basket that are so important for creating opportunities for other players in our lineup. She takes a little bit of pressure of players like chamique holdsclaw inside because she can rebound the ball and score. She does a really nice job stealing inside, catching with her back to the basket and maneuvering, and she has great touch."
-Stacey Dales-Schuman, Washington Mystics

Ann Wauters
On Ann Wauters:
"I think Ann is a great pickup. She is a versatile player in the post with the ability to step out and take the ball to the basket and to be a good passer. So she is a nice addition, not to mention she brings some youthfulness to the team which I know they were trying to do. With Ann, Tari and Elena all down there and able to make shots, we are really going to spread defenses and make teams work."
-Becky Hammon, New York Liberty

Betty Lennox
On Betty Lennox:
"She is like the Energizer bunny out there. She has a lot of energy to her game, very good offensive player, quick offensively and defensively. I think shes going to bring a lot to our team. We had a lot of shooters, we had a lot of inside players, but Betty is a scorer. She knows how to put the ball in the basket no matter where she is. I think that she will play a very important role on our team. Im just glad I dont have to guard her."
-Sue Bird, Seattle Storm
Sue Bird
Deanna Jackson
On Deanna Jackson:
"Im excited about getting Deanna. I think the defensive intensity that she brings is something that we lacked at times last year. Having played against her, with her guarding me all of the time and vice versa, I think she will bring a lot to our team in terms of defensive intensity and being in the right place at the right time. And it will be nice to get her off of my case, though Im sure well be going at each other in practice, but never against her."
Tamika Catchings, Indiana Fever
Tamika Catchings
Mery Andrade
On Mery Andrade:
"She will definitely add some depth to our team. She is a very good defensive player, she works hard and thats what we are all about. You can call her a veteran, so we are adding another veteran to our team who has been in that critical playoff time and who knows what playing hard is all about."
