Getting to know...Iowa State guard Alison Lacey

Its no secret that WNBA coaches and GMs have plucked some top talent out of Australia in past drafts. You of course have two-time MVP and Seattle Storm center Lauren Jackson, drafted first overall in 2001. Penny Taylor, who went 11th overall in 2001, is another, while Connecticut Sun guard Erin Phillips remains the most recent and still-active player out of Australia, taken in the second round by Connecticut in 2005.

With regards to all-time international draft representation, Australia leads the pack with 13 overall players selected in the WNBA Draft since 1998. Iowa State guard and Australia native Alison Lacey is certainly in good company, as she is expected to increase that number to 14 following the 14th annual WNBA Draft this Thursday at the NBA Entertainment studios in Secaucus, New Jersey.

I look up to Australians that are currently playing in the WNBA, said Lacey in an interview with WNBA.com. To come from another country and be successful in the WNBA is something that is not easy. I look up to everyone that has accomplished that.

Of course, Laceys college career is nothing short of a stellar accomplishment either. Over four seasons at Iowa State, Lacey tallied 1,620 points, 528 assists and 578 rebounds, making her the first player in school history to surpass the 1500-500-500 plateau in those three categories, respectively. With her college playing days now behind her, Lacey has spent the downtime between school days and Draft Day to work on her game a bit.

My strength and my speed is something I would like to improve, said Lacey. Since the end of the season I have been in the gym working on my shooting and working on getting my strength back in the weight room.

As days tick down to hours and hours tick down to minutes, you can bet, much like every other woman in the room on Draft Day, emotions will be a bit overwhelming for the six-foot guard.

I have a lot of nerves as the draft approaches, said Lacey. I am anxious and also excited as to what will happen. I am just enjoying this opportunity and excited to see what will happen next.
