vs.
POSTGAME QUOTES
JULY 25, 2002
COMETS COACH VAN CHANCELLOR
On the game:
"12,000 people on a Thursday night - that's pretty good. I'm
pretty happy with us. We're playing with a really sick Tina Thompson right
now. It's amazing that she'd have eight rebounds and 18 points. Sheryl
(Swoopes) is really holding us together. I thought (Sonja) Henning was so
good in the second half defensively; she really kept them out of their
offense. She had eight points, five rebounds and three assists. I don't see but one
thing wrong with her tonight and that was turnovers. We came back in the
second half and really hurt them on the boards."
On the difference between previous Comets-Sol games:
"I thought they had
a really good offensive plan. Betty Lennox came in and made some really
tough shots, but I thought we're getting a little closer. I said at the
last game, we're getting a little closer offensively and I'm getting a
little happier."
On the team's second half control:
"We began to run and get the ball where I
wanted. I'm happy with this win. We've been a team that's really played
well against a team that doesn't have a .500 record. They've (Miami) been
playing some really good ball. I'm really pleased with our rebounding, I
would like to get a few less turnovers, but that's about it."
On Swoopes' defense of Sheri Sam:
"I thought that was a big key. In the
second half she (Sam) didn't get the looks because Sheryl wouldn't let her."
SHERYL SWOOPES
On the game:
"These are the kind of games you dread playing because they
were going to come out playing hard. They're a fighting for that fourth
playoff spot in the East; we knew we had to come out and be ready to play.
We were hoping we could get a pretty good lead on them so we could sit down
and rest a little bit, but it didn't happen. It was a tough game; we came
out and were much more aggressive this time playing them then we played them
the first time. We knew how they were going to come out playing. Coach
told us at the beginning, before we even went out what to expect, not to get
too frustrated, not to get too upset, just go out and do what we have to do
and we walked away with a win."
On Janeth Arcain's high scoring night:
"I was very happy and proud of her
because she has been waiting for that game. I think it did a lot for her
confidence. That is what we are going to need. Coach said that now is
the time that we need to come out and take it to a couple of more levels and
get some momentum going into the playoffs."
JANETH ARCAIN
On her play:
"I think tonight I was so comfortable and got some confidence
to make my shots. I played hard, Miami played hard, but tonight the Comets
showed how to be the four-time champions. I hope we continue to play hard
for the next game in New York."
On Miami playing for a playoff spot:
"They came to play hard and win this
game, but we are at home and we have our fans to support us. We play hard
for 40 minutes and try to do the best we can."
SOL COACH RON ROTHSTEIN
On the game:
"I thought it was a very physical game. Their offensive
rebounding really hurt us and that was the key. Their offensive rebounding
and our lack of defensive rebounding was a real key. At the half we had
them overall 13-9, they wind up 27-22 in the second half with 11 offensive
rebounds. They got a lot of second shot opportunities - way too many."
On the loss and its effects on their playoff chances:
"We're a game in the
hole, that's what it does. You have to let if go and get ready to play the
next one."
On the play of Betty Lennox:
"She's struggling a little bit as of late.
Actually, this was one of her better games since the All-Star break. She
made seven shots which was a help. Who else made shots for us? She was trying
too much. There were times when she was open and she turned shots down.
Pass up the easy play for the more difficult play."
SHERI SAM
On the game:
"They were more aggressive. They were obviously told at halftime that they weren't attacking the boards so they just attacked. They
were just aggressive. We just didn't take care of the ball, we tried some
things and that's when they went on that run and tightened up on their
defense and it was really hard to score. I'm not going to take anything
away from them; they played up in our face in the second half and we failed to
execute. I think we missed opportunities and didn't take advantage of
chances they gave us. They got offensive rebounds, second shots to give
themselves the edge. Any time you give a team like Houston an edge, they're
going to attack."
BETTY LENNOX
On her play:
"I haven't been trying to do anything spectacular, just things
weren't falling for me. But I'm the type of person that I'm going to keep on
trying. It's not going to stop me until the buzzer sounds.
On her turnovers:
"Players make mistakes. I was just too loose with the ball at
the end. Just a mental, immature mistake."
On the Comets defense:
"They didnt take me out of the game at all. I
think I just missed some open shots. I had wide open shots and just wasnt
able to knock them down. Our shots werent falling and the
turnovers were terrible. It just wasnt very pretty."
On the effect of this loss on the team:
"We have to look at it that it
happened and then move on. Theres nothing we can do about it so weve just
got to keep on going and prepare for the next team. Theres nothing we can
do about this loss. But its really good that Orlando lost. We dont play
two games the same, so the next team we play were going to play much
better, because we look at tape and learn from it, so its a positive
thing."
