Twin Chat

K. Miller

Twice the fun! Don't miss this first-ever co-chat with twins Coco and Kelly Miller directly prior to the sisters facing off against each other as the Mystics visit the Sting this Wednesday, June 19 (game tips off at 7 p.m. ET). Both twins are much improved this season after playing in offseason leagues together. Coco has been an integral part of Washington's record start and Kelly is getting big minutes alongside Dawn Staley.

Coco Miller, whose real name is Colleen, is averaging 9.4 ppg in her second year with the Washington Mystics. As the team's starting shooting guard, Miller has scored in double-digits in three of the first five games of the season, helping the Mystics to a 6-1 record, the best start in team history. Miller has opened her sophomore campaign with career numbers so far in this early season, scoring 13 points on opening night versus Orlando and handing out seven assists less then a week later against the Fever.

Kelly Miller currently ranks 15th in the WNBA in both field goal percentage (50.9%) and three-point field goal percentage (46.7%). She has raised her scoring average from 2.1ppg in 2001 to her current average of 8.3ppg, while her minutes have increased to 21.1 per game. This season Kelly has been a consistent and energetic sparks off the bench for the Sting, and posted career marks in almost every statistical category including a career high 23 points against none other than the Los Angeles Sparks on June 1. Kelly was the Sting's first round draft choice (second overall) in the 2001 draft.

Here's the transcript!!

Barry (Columbus): I was one of your detractors after last season (see my articles for Full Court Press). However, you two are on my All-Improved team! What was your offseason like? How have you improved your games so much and adjusted to the pro level?

Kelly Miller: In the offseason I think we both worked hard on our games. I don't know if it's as much improvement as getting the opportunity to play and having the confidence.

Coco Miller: We played NWDL. I think we both felt more comfortable. And getting more playing time has been great for both of us.

Jill (D.C.): Coco - I consider your improved play to be as important to the Mystics' turn-around as our new additions. You've completely won the respect of the fans. What aspects of Coach Stanley's offense really showcase your talents?

Coco Miller: I think Coach Stanley gives me a lot of confidence and freedom to play the type of basketball I play. I love her uptempo style of play. And I think I have more fun with that style of play.

Washington DC: Congratualtions to both of the Millers on the huge improvement in their games. Was the defense in the WNBA the biggest challenge for you in your first year?

Kelly Miller: I think it's a little different adjusting to the pro level, but coming from the SEC we saw tough defenses. I think now you're just getting the opportunity ot play. And that's the main difference.

Sarah-Indiana: What are your (kelly & coco) favorite singers?

Coco Miller: We're both big NSYNC fans.

Sarah-Indiana: Kelly, What did it feel like to be the No. 1 pick in 2001?

Kelly Miller: Being drafted in the first honor was a great honor and a great opportunity. I came to a team where there were a lot of veterans I was playing behind. And I think it was good for me to learn. I think it helped my skills.

Dumfries: Would you both like to play together in the WNBA?

Coco Miller: Obviously I think both of us would love to. It's a dream of ours. We're best friends. Sharing all the memories would be great. Hopefully somewhere down the line that'll happen.

Will Carpinteria,Ca: Iam a twin too.... How is like to play against your sister .... Do you sometimes miss your sister when your on the road playing basketball....

Kelly Miller: It's definitley weird. We've played together our whole lives. But we're best friends. I miss her alot on the road. Our cell phone bills are pretty high. we talk quite a bit which helps.

Coco Miller: I was just anxious to see her. It'll be weird but I guess I just can't think about it too much.

Stacey (DC): Coco and Kelly - since you obviously know each other so well, how do you think it affects your playing - in other words is it easier or harder to play against each other becuase you two know each other so well?

Kelly Miller: They'll be at the game. I don't think it's hard for them. I think they'll just be happy we're here. They'll be cheering for both of us.

Janice: For both Kelly and Coco: Have you ever played against another set of twins or sisters in a basketball game? Since you played in the SEC at Georgia, did you ever meet the Lowe twins (who played for coach Landers in the early '90's) or the Burge twins (who played for Virginia in the early '90's) and compare experiences about playing with your sibling?

Coco Miller: Actually we did get a chance to meet the Lowe twins. One of them came to our practice. In college, we played against a couple twins. I think a lot of twins have similar experiences. You share those same good experiences with each other. t's fun to hook up with them and see how they're doing.

TULSA: What do you do together besides play basketball?

Kelly Miller: We pretty much do everything. We're always there for each other. We're together all the time.

Dolores: Hey ya'll. Coco, what do you thihk the big turn around is for your Washington team?

Coco Miller: I think this year Marianne has made the situation a lot more comfortable. Our chemistry is great. I think that's the main key right there. Marianne lets you have that freedom to play your type of game.

songhie - duluth: What's it going to be like tonite - against each other?

Kelly Miller: If I'm guarding Coco I'll just look at her as any other player, guarding her hard. But it'll be fun as well.

Coco Miller: I think the main thing will be supporting each other. It'll be different. But we're just not going to try and think about it too much. And then after the game shake hands and go get something to eat.

Kelly Miller: Thanks for your support and writing in these questions.

Coco Miller: Thanks for the fans for all the support. We've had some great followers and we really appreciate that. And thanks for all the questions.
