Player who brought their dogs abroad
Finding Familiar Companionship Overseas

Most overseas leagues limited teams to having only one or two Americans on their roster. Of course it is easy to make friends when you have the international language of basketball in common, but several American players made sure that they always had a friendly face everywhere they went this winter: their dogs. From Korea to Russia to Europe, these WNBA players packed up their pets and brought them over for the duration of their trip. Find out who and why.

Janell Burse, Seattle Storm
What is your dog's name?
"My dog's name is Ginger."

What kind of dog is it?
"She is an Apricot Toy Poodle who is 9 months old and weighs 6lbs."

How long have you had her?
"I've had Ginger since last Sept. I bought her from a breeder in Seattle, Washington at the end of the WNBA season."

Where will Ginger live during the season?
"Ginger pretty much lives wherever I live. Right now we're in the Czech Republic. She loves the Czech Republic, especially when she gets to play in the snow! She'll be with me in Seattle this summer as well.'

Did you need to bring any special things from home for her?
"She really doesn't have a ton of special provisions here. When we're at my home in Louisiana, she has a big yard she can run around in, but here (overseas) the thing she enjoys most is trying to beat me up the stairs to the apartment. She has several jackets and sweaters, b/c it's so cold here and she's so small. I tried to get her to wear those tiny boots on her paws but they bugged her too much."

Do you bring her all over Prague with you?
"Sometimes Ginger does come to practice when we have a short one. Our gym is near a dog park and she really enjoys going out there."

What do you do when you play road games? Does she come with you? Does she like to fly?
"During road trips, our trainer's wife actually takes Ginger and cares for her at their home until we get back. They love her and she loves them too! On the flight over Ginger flew in the cabin with me under the seat. I took her out her bag a few times to stretch out, eat and drink (the flight attendants were really cool about it).

Does Ginger have any other furry friends in Prague?
"One of my teammates has a Yorkie, and we thought they could be friends, but they did not get along at all!!"

Shameka Christon, New York Liberty
What is your dog's name?
"My dog's name is Scrappy and he is ten months old."

What kind of dog is Scrappy?
"He is a mini pincher. I have had the dog for six months and I got him in Brooklyn."

Where does the dog live with you back in the States?
"
The dog lives with me all year round."

Does he have any special provisions with you in Israel?
"Scrappy really does not have any special provisions really, I guess."

What do your teammates think of him?
"The team loves him to death and they all have adopted him as the mascot. I have brought him to practice a few times."

Where does he stay when you travel?
"When we travel, he stays at home until I get back. He either plays with his toys, sleeps or watches tv. I have to leave the television on for him. On the
flight over he stays in the cabin with me. He is normally good and will sleep the whole flight until he smells food. Then he wants out."

Do any of your teammates have any pets that he can play with?
"None of my teammates have dogs that he can play with, but he likes it better that way because he wants all the attention."

Alana Beard, Washington Mystics
What is your dog's name?
"Chloe."

What kind of dog is she?
"She is a Yorkshire Terrier and is about seven months old."

How long have you had Chloe?
"I got her from a breeder in Oklahoma called 'Precious Pups' in October, 2005."

Where will the dog live during the rest of the year?
"WITH ME, of course!"

What special provisions does the dog have here?
"We have a yard, clothes and regular Eukanuba food. And lots, lots of toys."

Do you bring the dog to practice?
"No."

What did you do with the dog on the flight over to Korea?
"I had her as a carry-on item."

Chantelle Anderson, San Antonio Silver Stars
What is your dog's name?
"Cashmere, Caj for short."

What kind of dog is Cashmere?
"He is a Maltese and he is about 6 1/2 months old."

How long have you had him?
"I got him in San Antonio with about a month to go in the 2005 season... so I haven't had him that long, but he's already like my child."

Where will the dog live during the rest of the year?
"Wherever i go, he goes... so San Antonio for now."

What special provisions does the dog have here?
"I brought his food over here with me... he's only 6 1/2 pounds so he doesn't eat much. He doesn't have a yard and it's way too cold here for him to be playing outside. But there is a lot of space in my apartment here for him to play and run around. I think he misses the sunshine though :("

Do you bring him to practice?
"I did when he was younger in San Antonio, but not now."

What happens during road trips... or those trips to other countries cities like China?
"A lady that works for the team but doesn't travel watches him for me. I hate it because I miss him sooooo much when we're gone."

What did you do with the dog on the flight over?
"On the flight over here, he slept when i slept. I know a lot of people get a pill to put their pets to sleep during the flight but I ust couldn't do it. So I just played with him and stuff. It was kind of cool because all the flight attendants loved him, so they wanted to play with him, too. Haha... good thing he's cute."

Do your teammates there have dogs that yours can play with?
"No, there are no other dogs for him to play with. That kind of stinks, but I try to pay him as much attention as i can. He's sooooo spoiled."
