With the recent dunks by Candace Parker, what do you think about this new phenomenon?
Is it good for the game in that it brings more attention to the league and its
players? Or does it take away from the basic skills around which our game is built?
- Norman, Sandusky, Ohio
I just think that the dunk in our game is a focal point for entertainment right now. The thing that I like about it is that, obviously, it shows that we have the ability to do that. The days of Michelle Snow's scripted All-Star dunks are over. We don't need to do that anymore.
Lisa Leslie can do it and Candace Parker and Michelle Snow and others In pregame warm-ups on Tuesday, Ann Wauters tried to dunk. And we all just stopped and turned. We couldn't believe Ann Wauters was hanging from the rim. OK, she missed the dunk, but we all just went, "Wow! We didn't know Ann could do that." You know, it was pretty cool. I think that's just another piece of our game that speaks to the fact that we are growing in our sport and we're getting better.
And Candace Parker dunked with ease. I mean, two games in a row she dunked with ease. If anybody says it's bad for our sport, then I want to sit down and have lunch with you. And I want to know why somebody would say it's bad for the sport because it is great for our sport.
Hopefully if people are attracted to the idea of Candace dunking, they'll watch a game and be like "Oh, well, Lisa Leslie's a terrific post player" or "Wow, Sue Bird is a terrific passer." They'll see some of the other things about the league that are really impressive too.
No matter what draws the spotlight people watching and caring is a good thing. And the more astute fans watch, the more are gonna be able to go "Wow, I didn't know Shannon Johnson was that quick." "I didn't know Tina Thompson had that much range." Or any number of other things. I think somebody has to be a lightning rod, and if every now and again a dunk is a lightning rod, OK by me. I think it's fabulous.
Hi Nancy, I am a huge Seattle Storm fan here in the Philippines. What is
going on with them losing four of five? After all the stars the team picked
up this offseason, is there more they have to do personnel-wise or is focus
the issue? What do you think the team has to do to get back on track and make
the playoffs this year?
- Slydon, Manila, Philippines
Well, Seattle's going to make the playoffs this year and you really don't have to be concerned about Seattle. Seattle is fine! See, the WNBA night after night is tough. And, you know, you gotta remember that the best teams will be there at the end. The Storm will be there because they'll be able to win a significant portion of the games that they're supposed to. And, you know, I feel confident in that. You know, Seattle is a heck of a team. They really are. I love watching them play. So they lost a couple of games it's gonna happen.
You know, the Celtics couldn't win a game on the road. And they have a ring.
When is Sylvia Fowles coming back from injury? When Sylvia finally does
come back, what role do you see her playing and do you think the Sky can get
back into a playoff spot in the East?
- David, Forest Hills, N.Y.
Well, she's going to be a very important factor in whether they make it or they don't make it. I feel certain of that because Sylvia Fowles was the number two pick in the draft for them because they thought she'd have the impact that Candice Wiggins or even Candace Parker would have on their respective teams.
But yeah, I still think Chicago has the ability to be a playoff team. There's enough time. If they can just hang in there for a few more games until Sylvia returns maybe eke out a win here or there. Then, I comfortably feel that they can be a playoff team. I really do think that.
I'm a HUGE fan of Lauren Jackson and saw the Storm play here a couple of
weeks ago. I got lucky with my tickets and was only in the third row from the
court! My question: What is that tattoo on Jackson's wrist?!? Yes, I was that
close to the game! I know she has three total... but it's got my curiosity going
with that one on the wrist. Any idea?
- Jen, San Antonio
Ummmmm, sorry Jen, but I try to stick to game statistics, not tattoo statistics. I don't know, but what I will do is contact Lauren and her tattooist, and I'll get back to you immediately on that. I will make the call. I'm really gonna call Lauren. And thank you thank you for really reaching deep and letting me use my years of experience and knowledge to properly field your insightful question. ;)
The Connecticut Sun have a Senior Dance Team that fans just love this year.
How many other WNBA teams have Senior Dance Teams and have the fans been receptive
to them? Will the league's television networks ever televise the Senior Dance
Teams for those fans who can't go to games and have depend on television?
- Butter, Columbia, Conn.
I'm personally insulted by the use of the word "senior." ;) I think those groups are so cool, only because they are great entertainment for the fans but they are so loyal to the teams and they take what they do seriously.
The coolest part is that they get after it. And, honestly, I'm really proud that we have them. I mean I hope we have more like the little dancers for the Mercury and the dancers that we have in Detroit and in Sacramento. Oh my gosh, they're amazing! You just want to hug them.
And not only that it's a way for those groups to have their moment in the sun, so to speak, but again, they care so deeply and their loyalty to their teams is so true and they're just fun for the fans. I love them.
