WNBA players already thinking about needs for next season.
Fast Forward to 2006

The start to the 2006 WNBA season may be eight months away, but strategy and thought on how to prepare for the 2006 season has already gotten started. After all, teams must submit their list of protected players to the league sometime in November, the expansion draft will take place in December and the free agency signing period begins in January. So what do some of the game's best think about what their team can do to improve next season and win the championship?

Lauren Jackson, Seattle Storm

"I think we can become deeper as a team. Obviously, sure up some weak spots on the roster. Defensively, just be more consistent. We lost a lot of depth last year but we can get that back this year. We have a lot of great young players coming through now which is good but we need to build on that now and get some veterans in there and try to get back to where we were in 2004."

Lisa Leslie, Los Angeles Sparks

"Probably revamp is what our management's going to do to improve our team. I think overall, you just need to improve your individual skills and come prepared. Obviously we had a lot of injuries this year and get healthy as well. You got to go back to the basics and just improve your game."

Sheryl Swoopes, Houston Comets

Obviously, having Tina Thompson next year is going to help a lot. I think our biggest thing is we've got to get tougher, mentally and physically. That's just how the game is going now. The refs are letting things happen and we've just got to get more physical. I think, with the exception of Michelle (Snow), we've got to find a solid five player that's going to get on the block and just be a beast down there. We get that and I think we have every piece to the puzzle that we need. Bringing Dawn in was huge for us - just her experience and her leadership alone helped get us over that edge, but I definitely think we have what it takes to get here next year.

Deanna Nolan, Detroit Shock

I think one of our main things this year that was lacking is that we weren't all on the same page. Of course, there's chemistry there but it was just one of those years where you can't get it together. So that's probably one of the things we're looking forward to next year is just getting it together, getting back to that punch we had in 2004.

Sue Bird, Seattle Storm

"The good thing about our team is that we are young, but very talented. The more we play with each other, the better we will be as a team. Now we obviously have more motivation because we are very disappointed with how we got knocked out in 2005. Hopefully we can use a little bit of that for 2006. The one challenge we may face is the fact that we have a lot of foreign players and the World Championships are next season. It will be interesting to see what happens to our team. More than anything, the World Championships will affect our roster, but we'll have to see what happens with that."

Becky Hammon, New York Liberty

"I think we need to fill a little bit of a hole in the middle of our lineup and just have to stay healthy. Injuries were the biggest thing for us last season and we really just need all of our pieces together in the same place at the same time."

Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury

"Obviously we have a coaching vacancy and we need to put someone in there who can relate to us and take us to that next level. Player-wise, I think we are right there and so close to enjoying success. The last two seasons we were just a game away, so it's not like we have to change much."

Tamika Catchings, Indiana Fever (from her website)

"It’s hard to believe that there will be no WNBA for another 8 months. I wish the season were starting back up tomorrow!! I’m truly wondering where the Fever will go from here. We’re losing Nat and could potentially lose a few other players due to the expansion draft in November and free agency. I’m confident that things will work out and we’ll be a force to reckon with in 2006!!!"
