Sun Take Veteran DeMya Walker in Dispersal Draft

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (December 14, 2009) – With the third pick in the 2009 WNBA Dispersal Draft for the Sacramento Monarchs on Monday afternoon, the Connecticut Sun selected 6-foot-3 forward DeMya Walker.

“DeMya knows how to win, and we need an experienced frontcourt player,” said Sun coach Mike Thibault Monday, pointing out the role Walker played in Sacramento’s 2005 WNBA Championship series victory over the Connecticut Sun. “She was a key to their championship. She and Asjha (Jones) had one of the better head-to-head battles you could ever want to see.”

A 10-year WNBA veteran who has amassed 2,000 points, 948 rebounds and 365 assists during her professional career, Walker appeared in all 34 games for the Monarchs in 2009, averaging 8.6 points and 4.6 rebounds while making 30 starts. She averaged 9.2 points with 14 assists and 10 rebounds off the bench for the Monarchs in the finals against the Sun.

“First of all I’m really blessed to have the opportunity to play for Connecticut,” Walker said. “I’ve heard coach Thibault is an amazing coach. Having played for coach Wiz (former Sacramento coach John Whisenant) for so many years, I’m excited to play under coach Thibault. It’s a little bit bittersweet because it really means the Monarchs are over and I won’t be with my teammates any more. But I definitely feel like I am going into a comfortable situation.”

The Connecticut Sun will begin their eighth season in the state next May. Season ticket plans are currently on sale, and can be reserved by calling a Sun Ticket Sales Representative at 1.877.SUN.TIXX, e-mailing the Sun at tickets@connecticutsun.com or visiting www.connecticutsun.com.
