Sun Sign Gilbreath-Butler

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (July 7, 2014) The Connecticut Sun announced today it has signed Briana Gilbreath-Butler to a seven-day contract.

The signing comes as Allison Hightower prepares to undergo an arthroscopic debridement procedure on her left knee Tuesday. Hightower, who missed four games after injuring the knee against Phoenix on June 12th, is expected to miss two to three weeks. She returned to play sparingly in four games but did not accompany the team on this current three game road trip.

An All-Star in 2013, Hightower averaged 7.7 points and 2.2 rebounds in 14 games played this season.

The Sun are already without guard Danielle McCray, who had successful surgery on June 26th to repair a torn ligament in her right thumb. She is expected to be out six to eight weeks from the date of the surgery.

Selected in the third round (35th overall) of the 2012 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics, the six-foot guard was waived during training camp before being signed to three seven-day contracts by the Phoenix Mercury later that year. Gilbreath-Butler averaged 7.0 points and 3.6 rebounds in 11 games for Phoenix in 2012. She joined the Mercury again in 2013 after being waived by the Los Angeles Sparks during training camp. She saw action in all 34 games for the Mercury in 2013, averaging 4.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Gilbreath-Butler was waived by Phoenix on May 15, 2014.

Connecticut will be in action next on Tuesday at Atlanta at 7 p.m. That game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
