Sun Players Read In New London
On Wednesday, September 9th, two members of the Connecticut Sun were on hand for a special Reading Time-Out at the Public Library of New London.
Lindsay Whalen and Sandrine Gruda participated in the event, which was part of the "Fast Break To Reading Program", sponsored by Pitney Bowes. The Sun and the Connecticut Library Consortium are partnering together in 2009 to raise awareness about literacy through the program, the goal of which is to encourage young WNBA fans to read for one million minutes over the course of the summer. Whalen and Gruda read Rap A Tap Tap , written by Leo Dillon, to the assembled children and then Jennifer Anderson, director of marketing and communications at Pitney Bowes, asked them questions about the story for prizes. The kids also got the opportunity to ask questions of the players as well as get autographs. The whole group read the Read To Achieve Pledge, stressing the importance of reading, together as well.
The Connecticut Sun’s “Reading Time-Out” event in New London is the one of several that will was held throughout the WNBA season in different regions of the state as part of the season-long initiative between the team, CLC and Pitney Bowes that is designed to educate youth about reading and to engage fans while raising funds for local, community-based literacy programs.
