Sun Overseas Report - Week Three

With the start of EuroLeague play beginning this week, members of the Connecticut Sun have been busy overseas.

In Russia, Sandrine Gruda scored 13 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had one block while Asjha Jones had 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block as UMMC Ekaterinburg defeated TEO Vilnius 85-56 on October 28th to open EuroLeague play. Earlier in the week, Gruda had 11 points, 10 rebounds and one block while Jones had two points and two rebounds in a 74-53 win over Dynamo-Internal Affairs on October 25th. On October 22nd, Jones had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Gruda picked up 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks as UMMC defeated Vologda-Chevakata 90-65 in Russian League action.

Sun point guard Lindsay Whalen scored 12 points and grabbed three rebounds as USK Prague opened EuroLeague play on October 28th with a 60-53 victory over Bourges Basket. That win followed two victories earlier in the week for the defending Czech League champions - 82-59 over Karlovy Vary on October 22nd and 113-57 over Hradec Kralove on October 24th. Whalen scored seven points in the win over Vary and had 12 points, two rebounds and two assists against Kralove.

Also in EuroLeague action on October 28th was MBK Euroleasing Sopron, featuring Amber Holt. Holt scored 11 points, pulled down four rebounds and grabbed one steal in the 74-63 victory over Good Angels Kosice.

Back in Russia, Anete Jekabsone-Zogota and her Spartak Moscow Region teammates opened up EuroLeague qualifying with a 95-71 victory over Frisco Sika Brno on October 28th. Jekabsone-Zogota had 14 points, one rebound, three steals and one block in the win for the Russian squad.

Rounding out the Sun players on teams participating in EuroLeague action on October 28th was Erin Phillips and Lotos Gdynia, which fell to Fenerbahce, 75-67. Phillips had 11 points, four rebounds, one assist and two steals. On October 23rd, Phillips had eight points, two rebounds and two assists and Gdynia defeated Super Pol Lezno Screen 81-63 in Polish Cup action.

In Spain, Kiesha Brown saw her first action of the season with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists as Argon Uni Girona fell to Hondarribia-Irun 80-71 on October 25th. Also in Spanish League action, Kerri Gardin had seven points and one rebound in Cadi La Seu D’Urgell’s 89-66 loss to La Caja de Canarias on October 21st and followed that up with 17 points and five rebounds in a 86-81 loss to Perfumerias Avenida on October 24th.

Chante Black opened Turkish League play with a 12-point, 10-rebound performance on October 26th, but it was not enough as Tarsus Municipality fell to Samsun, 51-43.
