Sun Overseas Report - Week 1

Connecticut Sun center Tina Charles has picked up where she left off during the WNBA season, collecting two double-doubles in her first three FIBA EuroLeague games for Nadezhda, Russia.

The 2010 WNBA Rookie of the Year, Charles had 14 points and 10 rebounds Wednesday in an 82-72 loss to Bourges Basket in France. Although she is leading her team in scoring (17 ppg) and rebounding (10.3 rpg), however, Nadezhdah is 0-3 in Group D competition.

Charles is one of three Sun players in Russia this offseason. Sandrine Gruda has returned to UMMC Ekaterinburg of Euroleague Women Group B while Anete Jekabsone-Zogota is playing for Spartak Moscow in Group C. Gruda had a season-high 20 points for UMMC Ekaterinburg, which improved to 3-0 with a 76-54 rout of Rivas Ecopolis in Madrid Wednesday. Jekabsone-Zogota was held to five points as Spartak dropped a 73-72 decision to ZVVZ USK Prague, also on Wednesday.

In a Group A Euroleague game in Hugary Thursday, Sun forward Kelsey Griffin had eight points and six rebounds for Pecs in a 70-54 loss to USO Mondeville. Griffin is averaging 11.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game for Pecs, which is 1-2.

Earlier in the week in France, Allison Hightower had 14 points for Reze Nantes Basket 44 during a 76-74 loss to USO Mondeville. Hightower is averaging 13.8 points for Reze Nantes.

Meanwhile, in Israel, Renee Montgomery scored a team-high 14 points, but Maccabi Ashdod was beaten 73-46 by Elitzur Ramla in FIBA Eurobasket action. Montgomery is leading the team in scoring (18.5 points), steals (3.3) and assists (3.0) per game for Maccabi Ashdod, which is 1-3 this season in Division I.

Sun players Kerri Gardin and Danielle McCray were also busy in Israel this week.

McCray collected a team-high 20 points for Hapoel Rishon Le-Zion during a 77-58 loss to Maccabi Ramat Hen on Monday. In four games this season, McCray is averaging a team-high 20.3 points per game.

Gardin had seven points and seven rebounds for Elitzur Maclaren Holon in an 87-67 loss to Elitzur Netanya on Monday. She is averaging 13 points and 7.8 rebounds for her team, which is 1-3 in Division I.
