UNCASVILLE, CT. (May 4, 2004) – Veteran forward Brooke Wyckoff suffered a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament in her right knee and is out for the season.
The 6-foot-1 Wyckoff injured her knee in practice Monday at Connecticut College, and the injury was officially diagnosed Tuesday afternoon. Dr. Michael Joyce will perform surgery to repair the damage within the week, and Wyckoff’s rehabilitation is expected to last six months.
“It’s a very, very tough loss for both Brooke and our team,” Connecticut Sun coach Mike Thibault said. “I know how much she looked forward to the season, and how hard she’s worked to get ready, and I feel really bad for her.”
A second-round draft pick out of Florida State with three years of WNBA experience, Wyckoff averaged a career-high 4.3 rebounds and 4.6 points per game last year. She played in all 34 games last season for the Sun, with 22 starts, setting or tying career-highs in nine statistical categories. She was expected to be a key role player in the frontcourt this season.
“Obviously, it’s a big loss for the team, and certainly for Brooke, who was in great shape and looking forward to the season,” Connecticut General Manager Chris Sienko said. “We know that with her work ethic, she’ll be back and ready to play next season.”
In other news, the Sun also cut Texlin Quinney, Isabel Stubbs and Jamila Wideman, reducing its training camp roster to 14. WNBA teams must make their final cuts by May 18th, reducing to 11 players, with a 12th on Injured Reserve.
