Whalen Heads Overseas
Point guard Lindsay Whalen is leaving her position as administrative assistant for the University of Minnesota women's basketball program to play for UMMC in Ekaterinburg, Russia.
The opportunity to play in Russia was presented to Whalen Thursday night, and she made the decision on Friday afternoon. She was set to leave for Russia on Monday.
“I have been working out so that was good, because I’m in shape,” Whalen said Monday. “It’s really good competition. I’m looking forward to it.”
Whalen trained with UMMC last winter before a persistent ankle injury forced her to return to the U.S. for surgery.
Whalen’s teammates in Russia will include Detroit Shock forward Cheryl Ford, and former WNBA players Suzy Batkovic and Adia Barnes.
