UNCASVILLE, CT. (November 1, 2005) — The Connecticut Sun exercised its option to extend the contract of point guard Lindsay Whalen, adding an additional year to her original contract. The Sun, who selected Whalen with the fourth overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft, signed her to a three-year contract. She is now signed through the 2007 season. No terms were released.
“Lindsay Whalen has lived up to or exceeded every expectation we had when we drafted her in 2004,” Sun General Manager Chris Sienko said. “She is one of the top point guards in the league, and has played a key role in our success the past two seasons.”
The 23-year-old Whalen led the Sun in assists (172), made free throws (125) and free throw attempts (156), was third in scoring average (12.1 ppg.), and fourth in total rebounds (128) during the 2005 season. Those were career highs in all categories. Whalen was named WNBA Player of the Week on June 27th, and she helped guide the Sun to a 26-8 record, the best in Eastern Conference history.
Whalen is almost completely recovered from the fracture in the tibial plateau of her left knee suffered during Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Sept. 10th. She will begin playing again in January, competing in Russia during the offseason.
The Connecticut Sun are the two-time defending Eastern Conference Champions. The 2006 season begins next May.
