Connecticut Sun Waive Payne, Futrell

UNCASVILLE, CT. (April 27, 2006) – The Connecticut Sun waived Candace Futrell and Marita Payne Thursday.

Drafted in the third round (29th overall) of the 2004 WNBA Draft out of Duquesne, the 5-foot-10 Futrell appeared in 20 games as a rookie. She missed the entire 2005 season after undergoing surgery to repair an ankle injury suffered while playing professionally in Israel. She was re-signed to a training camp contract on Feb. 1.

The 6-5 Payne was selected in the third round (42nd overall) of the 2006 WNBA Draft. A native of Australia, Payne averaged 7.2 points and 5.6 rebounds at Auburn, where she was the all-time leading shot blocker (377) in program history.

The Sun now have 11 players in training camp, 17 on the roster. WNBA rosters must be trimmed to 15 by May 2nd, with a final cut to 11 active players by 3 p.m. on May 19th.
