We talked with the newest member of the Sun, Tamika Whitmore. Get to know her a little better!
What were your first thoughts on the trade?
Great situation, the opportunity to play for a coach that knows the game really well and Connecticut is one of the few organizations that you really don't hear a lot of negative things about.
What excites you the most about playing in Connecticut and why?
What excites me most is the fact that this is a team on the verge of getting a ship (championship). A ship is the only thing that matters the most to me - I want it.
You spent five seasons in New York before moving on to Los Angeles and Indiana, respectively. What do you think you learned with each of those teams and how will that translate to your play with the Sun?
I've learned that in order for a team to win and be successful everyone from the owners to the person that washes our clothes has to be on the same page, or you fall short. I'm coming to the Sun to start a new chapter and give nothing less than my best everyday. I pledge to play for the logo on the front of my jersey, not the name on the back.
How has your game changed throughout your career?
I think I've learned to play the game in a much smarter way. I've learned to study it and see things before they happen. I've learned that no matter what, leave it all out on the court in games as well as practice.
What number do you plan on wearing? Is there a special significance to that number?
I've changed my number, but I'll keep it under wraps until media day. But, it signifies all or nothing.
What are some of your favorite basketball memories since you started playing the game?
I try not to take things to heart, but my fondest memories were when I was in N.Y. - just all the things that I learned from some of the best players to ever play the game, male or female.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I never have free time … but I like working on cars every so often.
What is your favorite city/country to visit and why?
It would have to be home. I love just spending time with the people I love the most.
Elvis Presley and Tammy Wynette are also from Tupelo, Mississippi. Who do you think would be third on the most famous natives list - you or (former Indiana teammate)Tan White?
I would have to say myself, because I set the standard. She has been the only one to rise to the occasion.
What are some of the goals that you have set for yourself during your WNBA career?
I have quite a few, but the only one that matters is a ship, a championship that is, and in the end I want my legacy to be known as a player who always played for the logo on the front, not the name on the back.
Are there any specific sports and or teams that you follow regularly?
Any sport my nephew is playing at the time.
What is your favorite part about playing overseas during the off season?
For me there is no favorite part. We have to sacrifice family and loved ones just to be able to play the game.
What are the differences between the game over there and here in the U.S.?
In the states it’s more organized and we really prepare for other teams, overseas there’s basically none. FIBA can’t even decide on the same ball for every team, but at least you get to play, right?
