UNCASVILLE, Conn. – The Connecticut Sun selected 5-foot-8 guard Jolene Anderson from Wisconsin in the second round and 6-foot-3 forward Lauren Ervin from Arkansas in the third round to close out the 2008 WNBA Draft.
Anderson, selected with the No. 23 pick, was the 2008 Big Ten Player of the Year after earning her second-consecutive Big Ten scoring title. A WBCA/State Farm Regional All-American as a senior, Anderson is Wisconsin’s all-time leading scorer, for both men and women, with 2,312 points. “She has a similar background to Lindsay Whalen,” Coach Mike Thibault said. “She’s from a small town and she’s the best player at her school.” A native of Port Wing, Wis., Anderson led Wisconsin all four years in scoring and rebounding and scored in double figures in 118 of her 123 career games making her the Badger leader in double-figure scoring. She started in every game as a Badger (123 straight games) and is the only UW player to rank among the top 10 in four major career categories: 1st, 2,312 points; 6th, 848 rebounds; 4th, 409 assists; 6th, 242 steals. Ervin, a native of Los Angeles, Calif., was selected with the 37th pick of the draft. A 2007 All-Southeastern Conference second team honoree, Ervin was a two-time SEC Player of the Week during the 2007-08 season before tearing her ACL on Jan. 10. In her injury-shortened senior season, the forward averaged 16.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. At Arkansas, Ervin recorded 19 double-doubles in just one and a half seasons. A Kodak Junior College All-American and Southern California junior college player of the year at Mt. San Antonio College prior to joining the Razorbacks, Ervin also spent one season at Kansas. “If she had been healthy, she would have been a Top 15 pick,” Thibault said. “She can play both forward positions. We’re fortunate to steal a player for the future.” Earlier in the day, the Sun chose 6-0 forward Amber Holt from Middle Tennessee State and 5-7 guard Ketia Swanier from UConn with their two first round picks.
