Ask The Sun: January 2006

Karl from Marlborough, CT writes:
I always watch the Celtics games on the MA local stations and see a fair share of Mohegan Sun advertisments. It seems like the perfectly logical place to advertise the Connecticut Sun is actually during the Celtics game. Is there a rule against advertising a WNBA team in a NBA game?

There are no rules whatsoever prohibiting us from advertising during the Boston Celtics games. However, as Massachusetts is not a primary market - though the reach is into Connecticut - it is dollars that are not wisely spent. Additionally, there is a difference in the everyday men's basketball fan and that of the women's fan, with some intermediate crossover. That said, I am glad you are aware of us and continue to support the team to the south!

Katrina from Abington, MA writes:
For the next season, what do you think will be your strengths and weaknesses?

Well, I think you need to look at the past year - or two - to see what the future will look like. If there is limited player movement, then I think what you see is what you get. We had the best record in the WNBA last year, so a lot of good things were in place. I think a 'weakness' if you call it that, will be the loss of Brooke Wyckoff - she is a true 'team player' who understands her role and was very good for team chemistry. That said, these are all athletes at the highest level with a desire to win. Staying healthy is a key to any team's success, as was dramatically illustrated with the loss of Lindsay in the Finals.

Kim from Millbury, MA writes:
Why don't you have the team play at the Boston Garden, or at the Worcester DCU center? I would love to take my niece to a game, but a two hour drive is just too long (for us both). Could you at least play one or two games at one of these sites. I'm sure the games would nearly sell out from the fan base just from Massachusetts.

Kim, while I enjoy you thinking big, we need to focus on what is in place currently. Simple facts: we don't sell out our own facility on a regular basis, and our fan base - while growing - is not as big as you think in MA. Therefore, I think it is a stretch to think we could sell out the Garden. While I agree two hours is a long drive, I did it every year with my dad to go see the Sox play starting from a very young age. And, I wont tell our season ticket holders that come from Vermont and New Hampshire that you think 2 hours is too long! I think it is easier for you to come down here one or two times a year than for me to play games in different arenas one or two times a year, don't you think?

Deborah from New London, CT writes:
Hi Chris, love the Sun, love coach T, I think the Sun need a rally song. Then whenever the team needed a boost, you could play the rally song, get the fans singing, it would be neat. What do you think?

Hmmmm. A rally song like "Brass Bonanza" from the old Whalers days? We have had some people submit some ideas in the past, but I think it is still hard to create an identity based on song, in my humble opinion. However, if you have an idea, send it in, you never know! We are always open to suggestion!

Rose from Middletown, CT writes:
I have been a season ticket holder from day one. What are the Sun's chances in obtaining Diana Tarasi and are you looking in that direction? She is a huge game draw. Not to mention her talent and personality, a perfect fit for the Sun. Let's bring her back to CT if at all possible.

Who is Diana Taurasi? Well, I am joking of course. Diana, who was drafted the same year as Lindsay, is in the third year of a four year contract. Unless a trade were to happen, she will not be available to us - or any team - until the end of the 2007 season. That said, if you think she is great, dynamic and a fan favorite, I would guess the fans and management in Phoenix feel the same way. But, just so you are happy with what you have, Lindsay has led the Sun to the Finals in each of her first two seasons; DT has not yet made the playoffs.

Chris from West Haven, CT writes:
Besides Nykesha, are there any other free agents that you are looking at?

The free agent period is upon us so I cannot get into any detail as to what players we are looking at. All I can tell you is that we do look and assess all players on all teams - free agents, restricted free agents and other players - that may make sense in a trade. As you know from our short history, we are aggressive in the off season. The moves of the last few years have given us Lindsay, by trading 'Pee Wee' Johnson and by trading picks, brought us Margo who helped to lead us to the best record in the WNBA last season. We will continue to bring in players that can help us get back to the Finals, and ultimately, win it all.
