Futrell, Mahoney Sign Contracts With Sun

UNCASVILLE, CT. (February 1, 2006) — The Connecticut Sun announced Wednesday it has signed Candace Futrell and Megan Mahoney to contracts.

Per team policy, no terms were released.

“We’re excited to have Candace back with us, she was a valuable part of our team two years ago,” Connecticut Sun coach Mike Thibault said. “And I look forward to seeing Megan in a Sun uniform. I’m glad they’re both healthy and ready to go.”

Futrell, a third-round selection out of Duquesne University in the 2004 WNBA Draft, was waived by the Sun last May after she underwent surgery to repair an injury to her right ankle suffered while she was playing in Israel. She was signed as a free agent to a one-year contract.

Futrell appeared in 20 games for Connecticut during the 2004 season, averaging seven minutes per game. She had a career high eight points at Seattle on June 11th, and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line against Indiana on September 19th.

Mahoney was drafted in the third round (34th overall) of the 2005 WNBA Draft out of Kansas State. She missed all of last season rehabilitating a ruptured Achilles tendon, and is currently playing in Iceland in preparation for her first season with Connecticut. She was signed to a rookie contract, a three-year deal with the team holding an option for a fourth season.

Wednesday was the first day WNBA teams could sign free agents. The Sun expect to announce more signings in the coming weeks.
