Coaching with Poppa

Sun Guard Jamie Carey
Hello Sun Fans. Seeing as Sunday is Father’s Day, I’d like to wish a Happy Father’s Day to all of the Father’s out there! It only comes once a year, but really, I think there should be a “Happy Parent’s Day” just about every other day with all that parents do for their kids! I know I personally will be forever grateful to both my Mom and Dad for all they have done for me, and I only hope to give them the same joy in return!

Since it is Father’s Day, I was asked to write about my experiences with my Poppa, Mike, this past off-season. We were able to share some great moments during the winter, coaching a girl’s high school varsity basketball team together. My Dad has been coaching varsity high school basketball for about seven years in the state of Colorado. He began coaching when I left for college, so I was excited to finally be able to see him in action the past few years! When I found out that I was going to be living in Colorado during the off-season, we decided it would be fun to coach together!

We had a fun season, working together a few times a week with the girls. The girls were a blast to coach, worked hard, and enjoyed one another. All of this made for some great moments for everyone involved. I learned a ton and enjoyed the atmosphere. We were co-champions in the league & lost out in the semi-finals of the state championship. It always ends too soon if you’re not the last one standing, but it was a year I won’t forget.

Once again, Happy Father’s Day to all out there. Hope to see you all at our game to celebrate such a wonderful day!
