On Friday, March 7th, the Connecticut Sun sponsored the Connecticut High School Girls’ Basketball State Championship Luncheon at the Aqua Turf Club.
All eight of the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) finalists competing for the four Class titles – Coventry and Bloomfield in Class S, Morgan-Clinton and Avon in Class M, East Lyme and Kolbe Cathedral in Class L and Career-New Haven and New Britain in Class LL – were honored at the luncheon.
John Holt, sports anchor/reporter for WFSB Channel 3 served as the Master of Ceremonies for the event, which began at 11:30 a.m. and included a catered lunch. The teams, assembled officials and media were welcomed to the event by Dave Maloney, CAS-CIAC Tournament Director. A captain from each team, introduced by Girls’ Basketball Committee Chair Sue Homrok, addressed the crowd before second-year Connecticut Sun guard Cori Chambers gave the keynote address. Connecticut Sun General Manager Chris Sienko made the closing remarks at the event and wished each team well in the finals, which were held at Central Connecticut State the following day.
It was the third season the Sun have sponsored the event as part of a series of initiatives undertaken by the team to highlight local girls’ high school basketball, where future WNBA stars are already competing. The Sun also conduct a high school tour, host the CIAC Championship luncheon and recognize the four CIAC Class champions during a ceremony at halftime of a regular season game.
