Mercy Named Sun Team of the Week
UNCASVILLE, CT. (February 13, 2007) — Mercy was selected as the Connecticut Sun High School Girls’ Basketball Team of the Week Tuesday after sweeping to victories at Shelton and Hamden last week.
Currently 16-4 following a victory over West Haven Monday night, Mercy got 17 points from Rachel Roberts and 12 points from Bianca Simmons in a 51-37 SCC Quinnipiac Division win at Hamden High last Thursday. Simmons also scored 18 points in a 53-23 win at Shelton last Tuesday.
Each Tuesday during the high school girls’ basketball regular season, the Connecticut Sun will recognize one Team of the Week. That team will receive a commemorative plaque, courtesy of the Connecticut Sun and Barker Specialty. Hamden High, Fairfield Ludlowe, Norwich Free Academy, Holy Cross, Windsor, Windham, Career and Plainville are the other teams that have been recognized this season.
The Team of the Week is the latest in a series of initiatives undertaken by the Connecticut Sun to highlight local girls’ high school basketball, where future WNBA stars are already competing. The Sun also conduct a high school tour, host the CIAC Championship luncheon and recognize the four CIAC Class champions during a ceremony at halftime of a regular season game.
