Eye Injury Sidelines Whalen For Upcoming USA Womens Basketball Training Camp

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (Sept. 18, 2009) — Because of an injury to her right eye, Connecticut Sun point guard Lindsay Whalen will be forced to miss the USA Basketball Women’s National Team training camp, scheduled to run from Sept. 30th to Oct. 5th at American University in Washington, D.C.

Whalen suffered a tear to the iris in her right eye when she was accidentally poked by an Indiana Fever player during the first half of last Sunday’s game at Mohegan Sun Arena. Doctors have advised Whalen to refrain from participating in basketball or any other type of jarring physical activity for at least one month while the injury heals.

“I was really looking forward to this first training camp, and I’m disappointed I won’t be able to attend,” Whalen said Friday. “I’ve played through a number of injuries during my career. That’s part of being an athlete. But when it comes to your vision, you have to be careful.”

The injury is not expected to delay Whalen’s return to the Czech Republic, where she will once again be playing for Prague.
